Adis LMS Drug Alerts is based on the Adis Literature Monitoring
and Evaluation Service and presents highly structured evaluations
(summaries) of key papers. In addition, bibliographic records are
included in the database for all other papers sourced by Adis that
are not evaluated.
Key papers are selected and evaluated by Adis editorial specialists
and are presented in a structured and consistent format to provide
a clear definition of the study and results. Drug and regimes,
results and side effects are presented in easy-to-read tables
Adis LMS Drug Alerts also provides an evaluation score for clinical
trials as an independent guide to the quality of the trial, design
and reporting.
Use AC89 to answer questions like:
- what pattern of cardiovascular side effects is beginning to emerge
with renin inhibitors?
- what review articles have been published on ACE-inhibitors over
the past five years?
- have there been any fair to excellent trials on the therapeutic
use of tryptophan?
- what cardiovascular disorders are induced by salbutamol?
Sources:
Over 1600 international medical and biomedical journals on drugs,
drug therapy, pharmacoeconomics and adverse drug experiences are
monitored.
AC89 replaces AALR. Adis International have relaunched LMS Drug
Alerts with Adis Clinical Trials Insight which is available in ACTI,
AC00 and ACZZ. These files are in a different format to AC89 -
refer to the ACTI database guide in BASE for information on how to
search these files - search as BASE- ACTI.

Title

Rheumatoid arthritis: management.
Influence of a wheat- and milk-free diet.

Text
1 OF 6
Purpose:
Previous studies assessing the effectiveness of exclusion diets in
rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have shown little success when either milk
or wheat were maintained. This study assessed the efficacy of a
wheat- and milk-free diet in patients with RA who had been
unsuccessfully treated with conventional drug therapy.
2 OF 6
Author comments:
The proportion of successes on the diet appeared to exceed the
placebo effect that has been previously reported. Recurrence of
symptoms after discontinution of the diet, and remission after its
reinstitution suggest that the exclusion of wheat and milk must be
maintained for life.

4 OF 6
Characteristics:
all patients met the ARA criteria for RA; duration and severity of RA
was variable, but the disease was active in all patients.

Terminology:
Generic drug names (INN/Adis preferred terms) are used throughout
Adis databases. When an INN or other non-proprietary name has not
been established, the research code, chemical name or other generic
name is used.
Spelling:
US English is used up to the end of 1989. For a comprehensive search
covering both periods, set Medword to on.
AT - Adis Title:
This is the headline for the printed summary; it is NOT the same as
the TI field. If the document is a summary of a review article, the
number of references cited by the original article is indicated.
Some original papers may generate two documents where distinct
studies are reported in which case the wording, e.g. '(Summary in 2
parts: part A)' will appear. Documents dependent on another record
will commonly have the same Adis Title with the annotation
'(Follow-up comment)'.
EV - Adis Evaluation:
This is the score assigned to Adis to therapeutic trial reports. It
is based on the adequacy of the data provided by the report and is a
cumulation of the individual scores awarded to elements of the study
design and conduct. Scores are categorised as:
86 - 100 Excellent trial
71 - 85 Good to very good
50 - 70 Fair trial
less than 50 Unacceptable trial or results require confirmation
by a better designed study.
MEDWORD should be used in AC89. ..RANK and ..MAP are available in the AN and
TI paragraphs.
