ADPR - Adis PharmacoEconomics & Outcomes News

Content

Adis PharmacoEconomics & Outcomes News from Adis International
presents up-to-date analyses on world pharmacoeconomics and
healthcare outcomes news, views and practical application.

Adis PharmacoEconomics & Outcomes News is a full text database
and is the online equivalent to the weekly newsletter of the
same name. ADPR contains rapid, evaluated summaries of important
news from the world pharmacoeconomic literautre, commentaries on
clinical relevance by experts on our International Editorial
Board and concise reports from all major international meetings
and symposia summarising key pharmacoeconomic information.

To ensure worldwide coverage, pharmacoeconomic reports are
routinely translated into English from German, French, Italian,
Spanish and Japanese. Pharmacoeconomic sources from USA (40%)
and Europe (40%) make up the bulk of the database. Concise,
substantive summaries are prepared from those papers judges to
be of significance.

Use ADPR to find the latest issues in pharmacoeconomics and how
they will affect your practice, institution or company, including
pharmacoeconomic studies on a particular drug or class of drugs,
the latest in regulatory affairs, and key opinions from world
leaders in health economics.

ADPR will enable you to find the answers to such detailed
questions as:
- what methodologies are available for pharmacoeconomic evaluation
during drug development?
- are there any studies on the cost-effectiveness of ACE-inhibitor
use?
- investigate the issues surrounding NSAID prescribing policy.
- what methodologies are available for pharmacoeconomic evaluation
during drug development?

Sources:
More than 2,000 major international medical, biomedical and
pharmacoeconomic journals are routinely scanned for inclusion in
ADPR. Material from over 80 Japanese journals is also monitored
and translated. In addition news from major international
conferences and symposia is included.

Antihyperlipidaemic drugs reduce the progression of coronary
artery disease (CAD), decrease clinical events and may be cost
saving, says Dr H Robert Superko from the University of
California, US. However, he adds that the number of patients
with CAD who actually receive treatment with these drugs is low.
Dr Superko has been involved in setting up 1 of the 6 American
Heart Lipid Disorders Training Centers that train physicians
and their staff to be `intermediate lipid specialists'. Many
physicians are unable to dedicate the necessary time to
adequately treat all patients with CAD; therefore, the use of
nurse specialists and midlevel practitioners is a possible
solution, he comments.
In the Multi-Risk Factor Intervention Trial, nurses were
trained to treat lipid disorders in patients with CAD, with
limited physician supervision. At 1 year, patients receiving
care from trained nurses had better lipid profiles than those
receiving physician care. 'Application of this model could
result in significant cost savings to the national health
plan', claims Dr Superko. He believes that a lipid disorder
training programme should be implemented on a larger scale.
For example, a training centre should be developed to set up
the educational format and material that would eventually be
distributed to multiple centres. An advantage of the system
would be the rapid transmission of clinical research findings
on the management of CAD.

Notes on ADPR

Searching ADPR, ADPC AND ADPD:
Use ADPD for most up-to-date news. For recent reviews(including
those from ADPD use ADPC, and for cost-effective retrospective
searching use ADPR. To search the complete collection use ADZZ.

Terminology:
Generic drug names (INN/Adis preferred terms) are used throughout
Adis databases.

Print titles and occurrences to determine relevance of article
and obtain a list of paragraphs where search terms appear, e.g.:

1_: ANTIMICROBIALS
2_: ..P TI, OC 1

then print either individual paragraphs:

3_: ..P TX(1) 1

or all paragraphs where search terms occur with HITS:

4_: ..P HITS 1

or alternatively use KWIC to check the relevance of the document
before printing.

Search Options:
..SET PLURALS ON and ..SET MEDWORD ON can be selected in ADPR.

Guides:
The guide to ADPR is published online in the BASE database -
search BASE-ADPR.
