The AMED database will be of interest to all those who need to know
more about alternatives to conventional medicine such as: doctors,
nurses, podiatrists, and other medical practitioners, therapists,
and members of health care libraries, specialist colleges, self-
help groups and the pharmaceutical industry, as well as allied
health professionals like physiotherapists and occupational
therapists whose practice is conventional.
Descriptors used in indexing documents are based on the MeSH
(Medical Subject Headings) of the National Library of Medicine.
AMED includes an interactive thesaurus enabling users to search
the hierarchy of indexing terms in advance of their search - and
so be able to select the most appropriate one(s) for their subject
area. Refer to the appendices of this guide for more information
on using DataStar's interactive thesaurus functionality.
Use AMED to answer questions such as:
- how effective is speech therapy with childhood stutterers?
- how does Ayurvedic medicine classify population?
- what are the osteopathic treatments for low back pain?
- which homeopathic remedies have been subject to clinical trials?
Sources:
Approximately 400 biomedical journals are indexed regularly,
and relevant articles are taken from other journals. The database
includes English-language and European sources; newspapers and
books are also indexed.

DE - DESCRIPTORS:
Allied & Complementary Medicine Thesaurus Terms:
The DE paragraph contains descriptors from the AMED Thesaurus,
which consists of about 3,500 controlled terms. These terms
also are available in their own DataStar database - AVOC.
Use the thesaurus terms to produce the most accurate search
results.
The terms are 'double-posted'. For example, PROTEINS.DE. will
retrieve not only articles indexed to PROTEINS, but also those
on VIRAL-PROTEINS, MUSCLE-PROTEINS, NERVE-TISSUE-PROTEINS, etc.
If you wish to restrict your search to the single term PROTEINS,
use the .W. qualifier:
1_: PROTEINS.W..DE.
Refer to the appendices of this guide for in-depth information on
how to use the thesaurus.
Terms displayed in DE in lower-case and with a plus-sign (+) are
'additional descriptors'. These are terms added as an aid to
retrieval but which are not controlled - i.e. you will not
necessarily find them in the thesaurus.
Note that terms may appear either within the MJ and MN paragraphs
(the bona fide thesaurus paragraphs) or within ID. Though the
terms can be distinguished by their different appearance, there may
be some confusion when using thesaurus functionality. Selecting
individual 'R' or 'T' entries after a ..THES or ..TREE command will
include terms from ID, whereas 'exploding' a thesaurus term will
exclude these as they have not been assigned a tree number.
E-journal links:
E-journal links (Starlinks) are available in AMED in records from
April 1999 onwards.
Search Options:
..SET PLURALS ON and ..SET MEDWORD ON can be selected in AMED.

The guide to AMED is available online in the BASE database - search
