The AMED Vocabulary file gives you to access the database of
controlled descriptor terms used by the British Library to index
articles in their renowned Allied & Complementary Medicine database.
Typical of a thesaurus, not only the terms themsleves are listed,
but also broader, narrower and related terms as appropriate. In
addition synonyms and additional notes indicate the concepts that
are covered by the term, and other information - such as when the
term first came to be used by the British Library.
AVOC is a invaluable aid to searching the Allied & Complementary

SY - Synonyms (used for):
The terms listed here are not, in themselves, thesaurus terms but
indicate other concepts that are covered by the term listed in DE.
RT - Related terms:
The terms listed here are other thesaurus terms which are related
to the term listed in DE.
When searching AVOC for an unfamiliar concept, you should not
qualify your search to a specific field, as it is important to see
how your search term is used - e.g. if the term only appears in the
SY field, you will be able to see what the preferred search term
(DE) should be.
DS - Descriptor status:
There are two status types: 'GO' and 'STOP'. GO terms are those
that are in current use; STOP terms are those that are either no
longer used, or which are 'Tree heads only' - i.e. they are used
solely to group hierarchies of terms together, but which are not,
themselves, used as descriptors.
RY - Document type:
All documents in AVOC are listed as 'DESCRIPTOR' in the this field.
This field exists only as a standard feature amongst all Vocabulary
files (AVOC, EVOC, MVOC, NVOC and YVOC).
Guide:
A complete guide to the Allied & Complementary Medicine
Vocabulary database can be found in the BASE database - search as
BASE-AVOC.
