DataStar. For every database, a separate BASE document contains the
following basic information:

- producer name and contact details
- sample document(s)
- quick-reference searching
- predefined display formats
- in-depth description of each paragraph
Additionally, there may be other useful information specific to that
database, including details of separately published search aids,
look-up lists of common search terms, or special notes on how to
maximise your search results.
Use BASE to:
- get to know the subject areas covered by a database
- find out how to maximise your retrieval of data from that database
- find out the languages covered by a database
- display the CROS groups in which the database is included
- find out which databases have free practice files.

Who Owns Whom is the online version of the well-known Dun &
Bradstreet directory of the same name.
Who Owns Whom contains information on the corporate structure of
approximately 310,000 parent companies and their 890,000
subsidiaries. It covers all the major business locations of the
world.
Approximately seventy percent of the companies in WHOW are based
in Europe, twenty percent in North America and ten percent in the
rest of the world. Information for each full company entry
includes name; address and global region; business activity;
status as either a parent or subsidiary; year of incorporation,;
national identity number; legal status; and parent information -
including the name, DUNS NO. and nationality of immediate and
global ultimate parents. Global ultimate parent entries also
include a full hierarchical listing of subsidiaries and the number
of companies in the corporate family.
Who Owns Whom is an excellent source of information on
International company ownership.
Use WHOW to:
- find out who owns a particular company;
- list the companies owned by a certain parent;
- view a corporation's entire group structure;
- find companies in the Middle East with German ultimate parents;
- check multinational linkages for credit control purposes;
- compile a list of subsidiaries in Italy which have French
parents.
Sources:
Information is collected by a specialist team of editors. Sources
include questionnaires, telephone interviews with company
secretaries (or equivalent authority), company annual reports,
major business newspapers and selected trade journals.

Global Ultimates and Subsidiaries
There are two types of document in WHOW: Global Ultimates and
Subsidiaries.
These documents are identical except in two respects: the global
ultimate documents have two additional paragraphs - SU, which
gives a hierarchical list of all subsidiaries, and NU which
indicates the number of companies in the corporate family.
For each 'top-level' subsidiary a separate SU paragraph is
generated. Within each of these, companies are arranged
hierarchically with indentations to indicate the relationship of
one company to another.
The size of corporate families may vary enormously - from one or
two subsidiaries to more than a thousand. Always display NU (free
of charge) to find the number of SU paragraphs before printing SU
itself.
Every company listed in the SU paragraph of a Global Ultimate-type
document will have its own Subsidiary-type document, which will
list further information about that specific company.
No Branch documents
WHOW on DataStar contains details of only the main office of
companies. Branch offices of the same company are not available
in the database.

CC - US 1987 SIC CODES SEARCH DISPLAY
The CC paragraph contains the four-digit United States 1987
Standard Industrial Classification codes, indicating the company's
line(s) of business.
The code is given first, followed by a brief descriptive text.
Both codes and text are searchable. For example, to find companies
whose line of business is perfume, type:

To broaden a search of an industrial sector, you can explode the
codes by adding a hash sign (#) after one, two or three digits.
This is a very powerful search tool and response time is much
Faster than using standard '$' truncation.
