Text of report by Zimbabwean radio web site on 25 January the
minister of Defence, Mr Moven Mahachi, says Zimbabwe's defence
policy will continue being that of moulding a highly trained
and appropriately equipped force that is capable of discharging
its duties. Mr Mahachi said this at the Zimbabwe Staff College
in Harare during a seminar attended by members of the defence
forces, the Zimbabwe Republic police, the president's office,
prison services as well as officers from Botswana, South
Africa, Namibia, Tanzania and Zambia. He says the demands in
internal and external military expenditure hinges on political,
economic and strategic factors. Mr Mahachi says the government
will continue to enlighten the public on the operations of the
defence forces since public understanding can ensure the forces
of support of the community in times of conflict. He says the
country will continue providing support to other states in
situations of inter-state conflict adding that this will be
done under bilateral or multilateral arrangements consistent
with the United Nations and Organisation of African Unity
charters.
