BIAF - BIOSIS Authority File

Content

The BIOSIS Authority File contains the controlled terms used to
index the world's life science literature included in BIOSIS
Previews(r). The following categories of controlled terms are in
use:

- Major Concepts
- Super Taxa & Biosystematic Codes
- Organisms
- Taxa Notes
- Parts, Structures & Systems of Organisms
- Diseases
- Chemicals & Biochemicals
- Sequence Data
- Geopolitical Locations (often called Geographic Areas)
- Geologic Time
- Methods & Equipment
- Concept Codes.

Some terms contain a Notes paragraph (NO). This is especially
useful because it provides details on how the controlled terms
are being used in BIOL.

Before 1993, Biosystematic and Concept Codes were used by BIOSIS
to index documents. Use the BIOSIS Search Guide to check on the
pre-1993 coding.

Use BIAF to:
- establish what the controlled vocabulary is in BIOSIS for
major concepts, organisms, and geographical areas;
- find out what terminology you should be using to pinpoint
documents discussing new species;
- establish what the broader controlled terminology is for
groups of diseases, drugs, organ systems and sequence types.

Notes on the most productive uses of BIAF

BIAF is a tool which helps you searching BIOL more effectively.
All terms which appear in BIAF are controlled. You will find the
BIAF controlled terms in the Descriptor (DE) paragraph of BIOL.

Controlled terms and concepts have been categorised as follows:

- Major Concepts
- Super Taxa & Biosystematic Codes
- Organisms
- Taxa Notes
- Parts, Structures & Systems of Organisms
- Diseases
- Chemicals & Biochemicals
- Sequence Data
- Geopolitical Locations (often called Geographic Areas)
- Geologic Time
- Methods & Equipment
- Concept Codes

Each category has its own paragraph label and quick code. The
quickest and most efficient way to establish what controlled
terms are available in each category is by using the category
quick code with the ROOT feature:

1_: ROOT OR=

(provides a list of controlled organism terms)

2_: ROOT OR=F

(provides a list of organism terms starting with F)

You can then pick the relevant item in your ROOT list and
display the record. For example, to pick the item labelled R2:

3_: R2

and then print the result:

4_: ..P 3 ALL 1.
