In 8/00, a San Francisco County, CA, jury awarded $11 mil
in compensatory damages to 21 African-American employees
of Interstate Bakeries Corp, the biggest wholesale baker
in the US and the maker of Twinkies and Wonder Bread. The
employees alleged discrimination on the part of
Interstate Bakeries, referring to a hostile work
environment, a lack of promotion and hiring and name-
calling. The jury award, saying that Interstate acted
with malice against 19 of the 21 workers, opened the door
to $121 mil in punitive damages. However, a California
Superior Court judge cut the compensatory damages portion
of the award to $3 mil and the punitive award to $24 mil,
claiming that the original figures were 'far more than
what was needed to make the jury's point.' The suit
involved Interstate's San Francisco bakery operation and
Oakland and San Jose distribution centers.

SWISS WATCHMAKER TAG HEUER SIGNS TIGER WOODS IN GLOBAL

PARIS - Swiss watchmaker TAG Heuer has signed golf
superstar Tiger Woods to a multi-year contract aimed at
increasing the brand's notoriety among the sport's high-
income fan base. Mr. Woods, already one of the sporting
world's highest-paid product pitchmen, will earn a
reported seven-figure sum for fronting advertising for
TAG Heuer and assisting the company in new product
development aimed specifically at the golf market.
Omnicom-owned TBWA, Paris will launch its first global
campaign starring Mr. Woods in Jan. 2003. The print and
poster ad blitz will be the latest in an ongoing series
based on the brand's "What Are You Made Of? " slogan. A
second series of ads is planned to break in April 2003,
according to sources at TAG Heuer, one of many watch
brands owned by French luxury goods giant LVMH. The "What
Are You Made Of? " campaign-which also features the U.S.'
dominant sprinter Marion Jones and Formula One drivers
David Coulthard and Jacques Villeneuve-is the latest in a
long-running saga of sport-themed ads produced by TBWA
creatives in Paris. The highly-acclaimed campaigns, which
featured classic taglines including "Don't Crack Under
Pressure" and "Success Is a MindGame, " have given TAG
Heuer strong visibility in the high-performance sector of
the upper-end watch market. Signing Mr. Woods-already a
golfing legend in his early-20s-will no doubt increase
TAG Heuer's credibility when attaching claims of prestige
and performance values to its products. The endorsement
deal also adds a second sporting pillar, after Formula
One, to its marketing hierarchy. Lawrence J. Speer

Notes on BIDB

TI/TA - Titles:
Qualify to both TI and TA when searching titles to improve relevance
of retrieval; TA contains an annotated/enhanced title which gives
more information than the original title alone.

PA/CO - Parent company names:
If the parent company name is known, it will be displayed within
pointed brackets - <...> - directly following its subsidiary company
name in the CO paragraph. To distinguish parents from subsidiaries,
the parent name is searchable by qualifying to the paragraph PA,
e.g.:

1_: AOL-TIME-$.PA.

IR - Industry terms:
As an aid to retrieval, BIDB groups related US SIC codes under a
commonly used business term. When searching, this term is
automatically mapped to the appropriate SIC codes. For example, to
retrieve documents relating to all sectors of the automotive
industry, search as:

2_: AUTOMOTIVE.IR.

You can display a full list of these terms in the online guide to
Business & Industry in the BASE database - search as BASE-BIDB.

DC/AC - Concept/Advertising & Marketing terms:
You can display a full list of these terms in the online guide to
Business & Industry in the BASE database - search as BASE-BIDB.

CN - Country & region:
You can display a full list of these terms in the online guide to
Business & Industry in the BASE database - search as BASE-BIDB.

PU - Publisher:
This paragraph is only populated from June 2004 onwards.

..RANK and ..MAP: Are available in the SO, CC, IR, DC and AC
paragraphs.
