BIOSIS Previews covers the entire field of life sciences,
including their classification, life processes, environments and
applications. It presents published research findings and
literature references from the biological sciences and
biomedicine. It includes references to original research
reports and accounts of field, laboratory, clinical, experimental
and theoretical work.
The database covers the basic biological disciplines of
cytology, zoology, genetics, botany and microbiology; and
related interdisciplinary fields including biochemistry,
bioengineering, agriculture, ecology, food science,
research medicine, biotechnology, environmental studies and
pharmacology.
Use BIOSIS to find:
- a paper published in The Lancet on alcoholic intake in
pregnancy
- data on viral diseases of spinach
- recent data on microtubules of flagellate protozoa
Within BIOSIS the types of data available may be restricted to
certain years. Details of any year restrictions are given for
individual data paragraphs.
Sources:
Over 5000 journals as well as monographs, reports, reviews, books,
meeting literature and research communications from all over the
world are indexed. For more recent years, U.S. patents are also
included. Abstracts are added for approximately 80% of the journal
literature and for book synopses. The geographic coverage of
BIOSIS Previews is: Europe and the Middle East 51%, North America
31%, Asia and Australasia 14%, Central and South America 3%,
Africa 1%.

AB - Abstract
Polycomb group proteins are transcriptional repressors that
play a central role in the establishment and maintenance of
gene expression patterns during development. Using mice with
an N-ethyl-N-nitrosourea ( ENU)-induced mutation in Suppressor
of Zeste 12 ( Suz12), a core component of Polycomb Repressive
Complex 2 ( PRC2), we show here that loss of Suz12 function
enhances hematopoietic stem cell ( HSC) activity. In addition
to these effects on a wild-type genetic background, mutations
in Suz12 are sufficient to ameliorate the stem cell defect and
thrombocytopenia present in mice that lack the thrombopoietin
receptor ( c-Mpl). To investigate the molecular targets of the
PRC2 complex in the HSC compartment, we examined changes in
global patterns of gene expression in cells deficient in
Suz12. We identified a distinct set of genes that are
regulated by Suz12 in hematopoietic cells, including eight
genes that appear to be highly responsive to PRC2 function
within this compartment. These data suggest that PRC2 is
required to maintain a specific gene expression pattern in
hematopoiesis that is indispensable to normal stem cell
function.

BIOSIS Reload December 2003
The information provider has put a great deal of effort into
standardising the indexing of BIOSIS back to 1969, and provided
a complete reload of the data.
In many cases you will now be able to use the same methods of
searching across all years. DataStar has taken the opportunity to
make some improvements, including a different treatment of titles to
allow better deduplication, and standardised database splits.
Enhancements include:
- addition of over 9 million CAS Registry Numbers back to 1969
- unified revised lists of Super Taxa, Taxa Notes, Biosystematic
Codes, and Concept Codes across all years
- addition of Major Concepts to every citation back to 1969
- addition of over 6,000 Sequence Databank Accession numbers back
to 1989
- enhanced mapping of MeSH disease terms from 1998 to date,
resulting in the addition of many more MeSH terms
- significant enhancement and standardization of bibliographic
data, including re-mapping of publication types across the file
and re-parsing of publication year, volume, issue and
pagination data
- no further distinction between major and minor Concept Codes
- new paragraphs TT (Original Language Title) and CF (Conference
Information): these were previously included in the TI (Title).
As a result, deduplication between BIOSIS and the other
biomedical databases will improve
- new paragraph GN, Gene Name, (previously included in CB)
From March 2007 the coverage has been extended to include
archive records back to 1926. Database coverage is now:
BIOL (1996 to date)
BIYY (1993 to date)
BIXX (1969 to date)
BIZZ (1926 to date)
BI92 (1985-1992)
BI84 (1969-1984)
BI68 (1945-1968)
BI44 (1926-1944)
- Some fields are no longer supplied (IR Industry Terms, AI
Alternative Indexing, NA Named Persons) though their content
remains available in MI Miscellaneous Descriptors and DS
Diseases, and the 'super-paragraph' DE Descriptors.
- Data previously in paragraphs BC and ST is now all in
paragraph OR. Paragraphs BC and ST are now just duplicates of
OR and have been kept to allow existing Alerts to continue to
function. Use paragraph OR rather than BC or ST, as these may
be removed in a future reload of BIOSIS.
- Data previously in paragraph RN is now all in paragraph CB.
Paragraph RN is now just a duplicate of CB and has been kept
to allow existing Alerts to continue to function. Use paragraph
CB rather than RN, as RN may be removed in a future reload of
BIOSIS. Note that the quick code RN= is still
available and can be used to find actual CAS Registry Numbers
although not names of CAS Registry Number chemicals.
If you have Alerts and Saved Searches in BIOL, you should not need
to adjust them for any of these changes, unless your search
specifies non-English or conference words in TI (in which case
you should change them to TT and CF respectively).
BIOL contains all controlled terms in the Descriptor (DE) paragraph.
DE consists of sub-paragraphs:
- MC Major Concepts
- OR Organisms
- PS Parts, etc. of organisms
- DS Diseases
- CB Chemicals & Biochemicals
- GN Gene Name (and related data)
- SD Sequence Data
- TM Time (Geologic)
- MQ Methods & Equipment
- MI Miscellaneous Descriptors
- GA Geographic Area (Geopolitical locations)
Descriptor searching can be done across all descriptors:
1_: NERVOUS ADJ SYSTEM.DE.
or the search can be restricted to a particular type of
descriptor such as Parts etc. of Organisms:
2_: NERVOUS ADJ SYSTEM.PS.
Searching using a root of a word can be useful, although common
words (or stems of words) should be avoided:
3_: VISCOMET$.MQ.
will search the Methods & Equipment descriptors and find words
such as VISCOMETER, VISCOMETRY, and VISCOMETRIC.
For a complete guide to the BIOSIS database, search BASE-BIOL in
BASE.
