BNID - British Nursing Index

Content

The premier database for support of practice, education, research,
and development for nurses, midwives, health visitors and healthcare
assistants working in the UK or following UK practice, as well as
student professionals, and related community staff.

British Nursing Index is a tightly-focused, bibliographic database
comprising over 250 of the most popular and relevant journal sources
in nursing and midwifery. This includes comprehensive coverage of
all nursing, midwifery and related titles published in the UK, plus
a selection of important international nursing titles. References
are also included for articles relevant to nurses and midwives from
selected medical, allied health, community and health management
journals. In all its coverage, BNI aims to be as current as
possible, but it ensures that its coverage of its core UK nursing
and midwifery titles provides the most up-to-date indexing source.

The following are examples of subject areas covered by BNI:
- A&E nursing - NHS
- breast-care nursing - practice development
- community matrons - postnatal depression
- district nursing - psychiatric nursing
- falls in the elderly - resuscitation
- hand hygiene - student nurses
- learning disabilities - theatre nursing
- midwifery role - wound care

Use BNID to answer questions like:
- what is the impact on quality of life of chronic pressure sores?
- what are the current approaches to pain management in palliative
care?
- what is the legal framework supporting compulsory care in mental
health?
- what models of care are in use in midwifery-led maternity units?

From 2004, all documents contain concise informative abstracts,
uniquely written with needs of BNI users in mind, not merely
reproducing journal abstracts. Prior to 2004, documents contain
annotated titles.

BNI is aimed primarily at those with an interest in UK nursing and
midwifery practitioners and students, and descriptors used to index
articles reflect British terminology. BNI indexers have all been
involved as information professionals in the healthcare sector and
can use their subject knowledge to help BNI to aid users in
retrieval of relevant literature.

BNI includes an interactive thesaurus which enables users to search
the hierarchy of indexing terms in advance of their search, and
select the most appropriate terms. This is a unique thesaurus,
reflecting British practice and organisation of nursing, midwifery
and health visiting. Refer to the appendices of this guide for more
information on using DataStar's interactive thesaurus functionality.

BNI is compiled by a cross-sectoral partnership of libraries serving
nursing and midwifery practitioners, educators, managers and
students - Bournemouth University, Poole Hospital, Salisbury
Hospital, and the Royal College of Nursing.

Notes on BNID

TI - Title and AB - Abstract:
From 2004 all documents contain unique, concise informative
abstracts. Earlier content contains annotated titles, giving detail
about scope and coverage of the articles.

DE - DESCRIPTORS:
British Nursing Index Thesaurus Terms:

The DE paragraph contains descriptors from the BNID thesaurus, which
consists of just over 700 controlled terms. The thesaurus was
created, and is maintained, to uniquely reflect British terminology
in healthcare. These terms also are available in their own DataStar
database - BVOC.

Use the thesaurus terms to produce the most accurate search
results.

The terms are 'double-posted'. For example, CANCER.DE. will
retrieve not only articles indexed to PROTEINS, but also those
on CANCER-CHEMOTHERAPY, CANCER-SURGERY, LUNG-CANCER, etc.

If you wish to restrict your search to the single term CANCER,
use the .W. qualifier:

1_: CANCER.W..DE.

For in-depth information on thesaurus functionality in BNID, refer
to the appendices at the end of the online guide - see below.

..RANK and ..MAP:
Are available in the SO, AU, DE and YR paragraphs.

The complete guide to the British Nursing Index database is
available in the BASE database - search as BASE-BNID.
