BREI - British Education Index

Content

Information on education in the UK.

The British Education Index provides information on research, policy
and practice in education and training in the UK. Particular
strengths include aspects of educational policy and administration,
evaluation and assessment, technology and special educational needs.

Abstracts are provided for about 5% of the items in BREI. Every
article is indexed and the British Education Index Thesaurus is
available online within BREI to help you select the most appropriate
search terms.

Links to the full text of conference papers held at the University
of Leeds' EducatiOn-Line database are included in BREI.

Use BREI to answer such questions as:
- what has been published recently on dyslexia friendly schools?
- who is currently doing research on improving attendance and
behaviour in schools?
- are there any case studies of e-learning in higher education?

The British Education Index's sources include over 300 education and
training journals, mostly published in the UK, plus an array of
other material including books, reports, series and conference
papers. There is a small selection of non-English language material.

AU Taylor-Susanne.
AB In this article the author looks at knowledge circulation in its
literal context, starting from its initial production (creation) by
means of research, through the recording/documentation stage to its
eventual distribution and circulation. Knowledge circulation and the
application of knowledge are essential to a country's economic
sustainability. The author considers this in the context of South
Africa, where industry and the higher education sector, particularly
the technikons (equivalent to polytechnics or universities of
technology in other countries), are working together more and more
closely to bridge an education and skills gap that was mainly created
during the Apartheid era. This closer cooperation is largely being
achieved by means of the cooperative education model used by the
technikons and by a national skills development initiative
implemented by the Department of Labour via the Skills Development
Act (Act 97 of 1998). The notion of the "triple helix" of interaction
between higher education, government and industry, as proposed by
Etzkowitz and Leydesdorff, is incorporated into the authora¤ s
analysis. The ultimate fruit of knowledge is obtained when it is
widely circulated and becomes embedded in the minds of people who are
able to put it to everyday use - to support themselves and their
families and to sustain the economy - and then to go on to produce
new knowledge (Abstract reproduced by kind permission of the
publisher).

TI Phenomenological approach in educational research.
SO Paper presented at the European Conference on Educational Research
Post Graduate and New Researcher Pre-Conference, University of Crete,
20-21 September 2004. The text is in the Education-line internet
document collection at: http://www.leeds.ac.uk/educol/documents
/00003806.htm, 2004, pp. 23.
AU Prepoutsidou-Filitsa.
AB A phenomenological approach was used in order to identify the
attitude of children (12 years old) and adolescents (15 years old)
towards cigarette advertisements (ads). The inquiry has taken place
at Thessaloniki, an urban city of Greece in the end of '96, beginning
'97. The research method was focus groups interviews. In each group
four informants have participated. A total number of 29 children and
20 adolescents have been interviewed originating from 3 primary and 2
secondary schools. The sample was purposive and based on the
convenience criterion. The interview was semi-structured and most of
the questions were open-ended. The questions were designed to elicit
the cognitive, affective and active components of the ad. To
stimulate discussions five printed cigarette ads, of different
styles, were used. The analysis of the interviews was based on models
of phenomenological analysis proposed by Moustakas (1994) and
Greswell (1998). The attitude towards cigarette ads of both age
groups seemed to vary from neutral to unfavorable. However, during
the discussions some contradictions were revealed. This requires
further elaboration of the attitude and in particularly of the
emotional component towards cigarette ads (author abstract).

Notes on BREI

DE - DESCRIPTORS
British Education Index Thesaurus Terms:

The DE paragraph contains descriptors from the BEI Thesaurus, which
consists of about 5,000 controlled indexing terms. The interactive
thesaurus is available online (using the commands ..THES, ..TREE and
..EXPL) and further information about each term is available in the
GVOC database.

Use the BREI thesaurus to help retrieve the most accurate search
results.

The descriptor terms are double-posted. For example, LEARNING.DE. will
retrieve not only articles indexed to LEARNING, but also those on
LEARNING-DIFFICULTIES, ADULT-LEARNING, LEARNING-MOTIVATION, etc.

If you wish to restrict your search to the single BEI term LEARNING,
use the additional qualifier .W.:

1_: LEARNING.DE..W.

Use the online thesaurus (..THES) to check search terms:

2_: ..THES LEARN

THES LEARN$
R1 Learning-To-Learn --> Learning-Strategies
R2 Learned-Helplessness --> Helplessness
R3 Learner-Autonomy --> Personal-Autonomy
R4 Learner-Centred-Curriculum
R5 Learner-Centred-Methods

R14 Self-Directed-Learners --> Self-Directed-Groups
R15 Slow-Learners
R16 # Learning
R17 Action-Learning --> Experiential-Learning
R18 # Learning-Activities
(etc...)

then select appropriate 'R' number(s).

3_: R2-R3, R6

Use hyphens or the ADJ and WITH operators and qualify to .DE.
when searching multi-word thesaurus terms:

4_: LEARNING-STRATEGIES.DE.
5_: EVIDENCE ADJ BASED ADJ POLICY.DE.

Use the hash symbol (#) to 'explode' BEI terms - i.e. to retrieve
all terms below the search term in the hierarchy, e.g.:

8_: POLICY#

or use the online thesaurus and select terms with the hash (#) mark:

9_: ..THES POLICY
