BTBL - TableBase(TM)

Content

Statistical data on all aspects of business, industry, economics and
demographics presented in tabular form.

TableBase(TM) contains tables of data relating to companies,
products, industries, brands, markets, countries and demographics
from around the world. The database always includes the table and,
when available, the text from the original article.

The tables are the focus of the database: for added precision each
table has had a title created summarising its content; also,
comprehensive indexing terms are applied to the content of the table
rather than to the original article as a whole. When an original
article contains more than one table, individual documents are
created in BTBL for each one.

Some 90 different industries are included and the database is global
in its coverage. Information in the database covers current year,
historical data, time series and forecasts for:

- demographics
- imports and exports
- industry and product forecasts
- market share
- market size
- market trends
- number of outlets and users
- output and capacity
- price trends
- production and consumption
- rankings
- sales and company forecasts
- shipments

Use BTBL to answer questions like:
- what is the forecast market for take-up of broadband services in
Western Europe to 2007?
- what is the market share and value by sales of foreign drug
companies in Poland?
- what has been the world price for copper over the last 10 years?
- who are the top 25 advertisers in radio and television?
- what is the global capacity forecast for propylene oxide in 2005?

Sources:
Data is derived from privately published statistical annuals, trade
associations, non-profit research groups, government agencies and
international organisations - like the UN and WHO, industry reports
prepared by investment research groups and from the over 900 source
publications from the Business & Industry database (BIDB).

The focus of researchers and developers is on finding drugs
to fight cancer. They're also interested in treating
diseases of the central nervous system and the heart.
Infections are high on their list, too.

The prescription medicines that will shape the
pharmaceutical industry of the next 10 years are in this
year's pipeline directory.

Of the 2,235 products listed in this directory, 234 products
are awaiting marketing approval in various markets
throughout the world; 437 products are in Phase III clinical
trials; 565 products are in Phase II trials; 324 products
are in Phase I trials; and 523 products are in preclinical
development. Almost 450 companies are involved in developing
or marketing these products.

The products awaiting approval should be launched within a
year or so. The products waiting for regulatory clearance
were developed to treat a host of diseases, including
allergies, cancer, depression, migraine, osteoporosis,
schizophrenia, and ulcers. A review of the products that are
about 10 years away from the market (those in Phase I
clinical trials) reveals a more intense focus on developing
drugs to treat cancer--going beyond brain, breast,
colorectal, non-small cell lung cancer, and prostate cancer
to cervical, gastrointestinal, head and neck, ovarian,
pancreatic, and renal cell cancers (see box on page 6).

Cancer is the most active area of study with 394 products in
development, followed by central nervous system disorders
with 243 products and cardiovascular conditions with 184
products. And 127 products are being developed for the
treatment of infections.

One hundred and two drugs are in development to treat AIDS
and HIV infection and related conditions. Researchers are
working to find new and effective therapies for AIDS, an
area where there is a critical need. Although there are 42
approved medicines for AIDS and AIDS-related ailments, more
effective treatments are still needed for the many afflicted
with this disease. To date, worldwide, about 4.5 million
people have died from AIDS.

In total, more than 2,200 drugs are being developed by
almost 450 pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and drug delivery
companies. In this second edition of What's in the Pipeline
directory, the editors have compiled these products and
listed them first by their status and then by their
therapeutic category. The editors also compiled a list of
products whose trials were discontinued in the last year.
Additionally, this edition includes a list of the first
products approved in the United States in 1997, the products
approved in the United States in 1996, and the first-time
European approvals of 1996.

Research-based pharmaceutical companies will invest $18.9
billion in research and development in 1997, an 11.5%
increase over 1996. These expenditures include $15.1 billion
spent within the United States by both U.S.-owned and
foreign-owned companies, plus an additional $3.8 billion
spent abroad by U.S.-owned companies.

Research-based companies have more than doubled their
research and development spending since 1990. And these
figures just take into account members of the Pharmaceutical
Research and Manufacturers of America. When all
biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies are considered,
the figure is much higher.

More than one-third of company-financed research and
development in the United States is devoted to evaluation of
promising drug compounds in human clinical trials. Phase I,
Phase II, and III trials account for 30% of research and
development spending. An additional 5% of research and
development spending is allocated to Phase IV clinical
trials, which may occur after the product has received
regulatory approval.

photo omitted

In addition, about 10% of research and development spending
is allocated for manufacturing process development and
quality control functions.

Pharmaceutical companies allocate more than 40% of research
and development to preclinical functions. About 11% of
research and development is spent on synthesizing and
extracting compounds for evaluation. Subsequent biological
screening and pharmacological testing account for 16% of
research and development. Later testing for toxicology and
safety requires about 6% of research and development and
dosage formulation and stability testing requires more than
9%.

Over the past two decades, the percentage of sales allocated
research and development has increased from 11% in 1980 to
more than 21% in 1997. Meanwhile, the average research and
development to sales ratio for industries in the United
States is less than 4%. Based on corporate tax data compiled
by Standard & Poor's, pharmaceutical manufacturers invest a
higher percentage of sales in research and development than
high-tech industries such as electronic, aerospace, office
equipment (including computers) and automobile.

The success rate of compounds is diminished as they get
closer to market -- for every 5,000 to 10,000 discovered,
250 progress to preclinical development and Phase I clinical
trials; just five progress to Phase II and Phase III
clinical trials; and one of these will be filed for
marketing approval. Discovery research takes about
four years, preclinical testing takes about four years,
Phase I clinical trials take about two years, Phase II
clinical trials take about three years, Phase III clinical
trials take about four years, and regulatory review takes
about one to two years.

photo omitted

The cost of developing drugs is estimated by government
economists at $359 million. This estimate, however, captures
the final cost for drugs that entered clinical trials during
the late 1970s. A precise projection for what it may cost to
develop a drug today is difficult. Industry sources place
the number near the $500 million mark.

Notes and methodology

Information presented in this directory of drugs in the
pipeline was gathered from pharmaceutical, biotechnology,
and drug delivery companies, industry sources, the Internet,
annual reports, Form 10-Ks, and internal resources of Engel
Publishing Partners. For a product to be included in this
directory, that product must be in development (preclinical
trials through Phase III) or awaiting approval for the
treatment of human diseases and disorders. Drug delivery
technologies are only included when they have been applied
to a therapeutic agent.

The directory is organized by the products' phase of
development. The products are presented in alphabetical
order within their status. Products awaiting marketing
approval are presented first (page 8), followed by products
in Phase III clinical trials (page 20), Phase II/III
clinical trials (page 38), Phase II clinical trials (page
40), Phase I/II clinical trials (page 58), Phase I trials
(page 62), and preclinical development (page 72). Products
that are in various phases of development for different
indications or formulations are cross-referenced within the
appropriate section.

This year's directory has been expanded to include
information, when available, about a product's class,
administration, region of development, and marketing status
in the major markets throughout the world.

The editors have tried to determine which company has
marketing rights in which region. When known, the division
within the company that will be responsible for the
marketing of the product is listed. For companies that are
seeking development and marketing partners, the marketer is
listed as "To be determined."

For gene therapies, the editors provide information, when
available, about the gene and the technology or vector being
studied.

The products listed within the preclinical development
section include products that are undergoing animal studies
and in the research stage.

Products are presented by their trade name. When a trade
name is not available, the chemical or code name is used.
For many products in preclinical or early development
stages, only the class may be known and provided in this
directory.

This directory also presents the products in development by
therapeutic category (page 88). The categories are presented
in alphabetical order, and the products are listed in chart
format in alphabetical order within their category.

For the first time this year, the editors have included a
listing of the companies, their addresses, telephone numbers
and facsimile numbers (when available) that are developing
and plan to market these products (see page 136).

UK slimming and supplementary nutrition sales are expected
to jump 42 per cent to Pd738 million by 2005, reports
Euromonitor.

While some quarters claim the UK is becoming a nation of
'fatties', many consumers are still interested in healthy
living and are willing to buy supplements to help them diet.

The market researcher's report, 'Slimming and Supplement
Nutrition', states that the UK supplements market grew 9.6
per cent in real termslast year - much higher than the rate
in the US, Italy and Japan, which were the only other key
markets to experience real growth.

UK consumers will buy more supplements because they want to
"age gracefully". The market was the second biggest in
Europe last year. However, that still left it about half the
size of that in Germany, which topped DM2,290m.

Japan is the world's largest market - worth $5,214m -
followed by the US at $4,635m.

Sports nutrition and meal replacements (other than slimming
products) are the biggest sectors in the UK slimming and
supplementary nutrition market. Slimming aids is the third
largest, as it is in the US, Germany and Japan.

Pharmacies and drug stores accounted for the bulk of
vitamin, mineral and dietary supplement sales last year in
most of the key markets. This is mainly because many of the
OTC products were once Prescription Only and are therefore
bought habitually at pharmacies.

Euromonitor's 'Slimming and Supplement Nutrition' is priced
at Pd2,250. Tel: 020 7251 1105.

Notes on BTBL

TT - Table title:
Each table has had a title created for unambiguous retrieval of
information. This is the only searchable 'title' paragraph in the
database.

PA/CO - Parent company names:
If the parent company name is known, it will be displayed within
pointed brackets - <...> - directly following its subsidiary company
name in the CO paragraph. To distinguish parents from subsidiaries,
the parent name is searchable as .PA. - e.g.:

1_: TIME-WARNER$.PA.

DE - Descriptor terms:
Full lists of Industry (IR), Concept (DC), Advertising and marketing
(AC) and Country and region (CN) terms are available in the BASE
database - search as BASE-BTBL.

AV - Availability
Between October 2001 and September 2002, a number of documents have
been assigned the wrong availability flag. This error has been
corrected for documents loaded into the database after September
2002.

Guides:
For a complete guide to the TableBase database, search BASE-BTBL in
BASE.
