CANC - Cancerlit (ceased updating 2003)

Content

Cancerlit is the leading source of information on clinical and
experimental oncology.

Cancerlit contains cancer research publications from 1967 to March
2003. It includes all aspects of experimental and clinical cancer
therapy; chemical, viral and other agents that cause cancer;
mechanisms of carcinogenesis; biochemistry immunology, physiology,
and other biology of cancer, both in vivo and in vitro; studies of
mutagens, mutagen testing, and growth factors or other agents that
stimulate cell division. The NLM MeSH headings have been used to
index documents in Cancerlit and the MeSH online thesaurus
is available in Cancerlit too.

Use CANC to answer such questions as:
- what has been published about the carcinogenicity of Aspartame?
- how is nuclear magnetic resonance used in the detection of brain
tumours in children and adolescents?
- is tamoxifen effective in the treatment of metastasis in breast
cancer?

Sources:
Over 3,500 journals are regularly screened for cancer-related
articles; about 200 core journals contribute a large percentage of
the entries. Selected records from Medline are included. In
addition, proceedings of meetings, monographs, theses and government
and symposia reports are also included.

Abstract
The cylopentenone prostaglandin A2 (PGA2) is known to
inhibit cell proliferation, and metabolism of this compound
thus might be important in controlling its ultimate function.
The glutathione-related metabolism of PGA2 was therefore
investigated both with purified glutathione S-transferase
P1-1 (GSTP1-1) and with IGR-39 human melanoma cells.
Firstly, the irreversible inhibition of human GSTP1-1 and
its mutants C47S, C101S, and C47S/C101S was studied. PGA2
appeared to inhibit...

Notes on CANC

DE - Descriptors - Medical Subject Headings - MeSH Terms

CANCERLIT (since 1980) is indexed according to the same rules as
for MEDLINE, using the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) of the
National Library of Medicine (NLM). Records dated before 1980 are
not indexed.

Use the NLM's printed MeSH and TREE thesauri or the online MeSH
Thesaurus (..MESH or ..THES; ..TREE or ..EXPL) for
comprehensive searches.

The Descriptor paragraph is double-posted: PROSTAGLANDINS.DE.
retrieves the MeSH term PROSTAGLANDINS, but also the word
PROSTAGLANDINS as a MeSH fragment: PROSTAGLANDINS-A,
PROSTAGLANDIN-ENDOPEROXIDE-SYNTHASE, PROSTAGLANDIN-D2, etc.

1_: PROSTAGLANDINS.DE.

To restrict to the single MeSH term PROSTAGLANDINS, qualify
to .W.:

2_: 1.W.

Or use the online MeSH and select terms:

3_: ..MESH PROSTAGLANDINS

THES PROSTAGLANDINS$
R1 # 5 Prostaglandins '63
R2 3 Prostaglandins-A '75
R3 3 Prostaglandins-A-Synthetic '78

Use hyphen(s) or the WITH operator and qualify to .DE. to search
multi-word terms:

6_: PROSTAGLANDINS-SYNTHETIC.DE.
7_: PROSTAGLANDINS WITH SYNTHETIC.DE.

Qualify to .MJ. to retrieve a MeSH Term as a major topic of the
article.

8_: 7.MJ.

Use a hash (#) to 'explode' MeSH terms (i.e. for retrieval
of all terms in the hierarchy):

9_: PROSTAGLANDINS#

Or use the online MeSH and select terms with the hash mark (#):

10_: ..MESH PROSTAGLANDINS

and select

11_: R1#

Subheadings
Use the WITH operator to link the two-letter subheading
abbreviation, or full subheading to a MeSH term:

12_: PROSTAGLANDINS-SYNTHETIC WITH PD
13_: PROSTAGLANDINS WITH SYNTHETIC WITH PD.DE.
14_: PROSTAGLANDINS WITH SYNTHETIC WITH PHARMACOLOGY.DE.

Use the online MeSH and ..DISPLAY SUBHEADING (or ..D SH) Rn to
retrieve the allowable subheadings:

15_: ..MESH PROSTAGLANDINS

Pre-exploded Subheadings:
CANCERLIT has some pre-exploded subheadings which allow fast
retrieval of some important subheading groups.

QT - Quick therapy. Contains the subheadings TH (therapy), DT (drug
therapy), RT (radiotherapy), DH (diet therapy) and SU
(surgery).

QD - Quick diagnosis. Contains the subheadings DI (diagnosis), RA
(radiology), RI (radionuclide imaging) and US
(ultra-sonography).

QX - Quick toxicology. Contains the subheadings AE (adverse
effects), PO (poisoning), TO (toxicology) and CT
(contra-indications).

1_: INTESTINAL-NEOPLASMS# WITH QT

This gives the same result as but is faster than:

2_: INTESTINAL-NEOPLASMS# WITH (TH DT SU RT DH).MJ.

Quick-Search:
Quick-Search is a fast and easy method of retrieving Subheadings
linked to MeSH terms and pre-exploded subheadings. The Subheadings
can only be Quick-Searched as abbreviations. Precede your search
with QS:

3_: QS BREAST-NEOPLASMS# WITH (PP CH DT)
4_: QS BREAST-NEOPLASMS# WITH QD

Quick-Search also works very well in combination with the online
MESH and TREE, which saves time and typing:

R2 # ABDOMINAL-NEOPLASMS

T7 .... MAMMARY-NEOPLASMS
T8 .... MAMMARY-NEOPLASMS-EXPERIMENTAL

8_: QS (R17 T7 T8) WITH (PP CH DT)

Search statements, including those using Quick-Search may be saved
for later re-execution and as Alerts.

YR - Year of publication
It is often useful to restrict a search over a range of years:

1_: PROSTAGLANDINS WITH SYNTHETIC.DE.
2_: 1 AND (1998 OR 1999).YR.

Or use the ..LIMIT command:

3_: ..L 1 YEAR>1997

ED - Entry date
This gives the year and month the citation was entered into the
NCI computer. It is useful for precisely updating previous search
strategies:

4_: ..L 1 EDATE>20010306

retrieves all citations added to the database after March 6 2001.

Search options:
..SET PLURALS ON and ..SET MEDWORD ON can be selected in CANC.

..RANK and ..MAP are available in the AU, SO, DE and RN
paragraphs.

Guides:
The guide to CANC is published in the DataStar Biomedical Manual,
Berne, and online in BASE - search BASE-CANC.
