CELL - BioCommerce Data's Biotechnology Directory (ceased updating 2005)

Content

Biocommerce Data's Biotechnology Directory is a database concerned
with the business aspects of biotechnology and the commercial
applications of biological sciences worldwide. The company profile
records contain directory-style entries on organisations located
throughout the world. While the file contains two types of record
(company profile and abstract records), only the company profile
records are updated. Abstract records, while retained in CELL
are no longer updated. Abstacts of commercial biotechnology news
from trade journals, scientific periodicals, newsletters and
newspapers are available from Jan 1981 to Aug 2004 only.

CELL covers the biotechnologies of:
biological control, biomediation, biotransformation, cell culture,
cell hybridisation, DNA probes, fermentation, genetic engineering,
genomics, immunodiagnostics, industrial enzymes, monoclonal
antibodies, protein engneering, recombinant DNA, tissue culture, and
transgenic animals and plants;

and the commercial aspects of:
biochemistry, genetics, immunology, microbiology, molecular biology

and their applications in:
agriculture, animal production, brewing, chemical manufacture, crop
protection, diagnostic tests, energy production, food technology,
health care, horticulture, medicine, pesticides, veterinary
sciences, and waste treatment.

CELL corresponds in part to the printed publications: Abstracts
in BioCommerce (ABC) 1981-1996, BioCommerce Abstracts (BCA) 1997-
2004, The European Biotechnology Directory and the UK Biotechnology
Handbook.

Sources:

Directory entries are compiled from questionnaires, updated from
abstracted articles and verified regularly. Articles cited in
Biocommerce Abstracts and Directory are taken from over 100 English
language specialist and popular media sources, mainly published in
the USA and United Kingdom. Each abstract may cite several sources
where the articles contain substantially the same information and
typically, at least two sources are given.

The Irish supermarket chain, SuperValu Supermarkets, has
started selling beef which has been tested by Enfer
Scientific to confirm that it is free of prions using
diagnostic test technology licensed from Proteus
International. The test was developed to detect bovine
spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). Proteus International's
share price increased by 23p to close at 83p following
news that the test was being commercially used.

Text
Amgen is a major biotechnology company that discovers,
develops, markets and manufactures human therapeutics
based on advances in cellular and molecular biology for
healthcare markets. Its common stock is traded on the
National Association of Securities Dealers Automated
Quotation (NASDAQ) system under the symbol AMGN. Amgen
produces recombinant human erythropoietin (EPO) called
EPOGEN (RTM) (Epoetin alpha) for stimulating the production
of red blood cells in patients undergoing dialysis and
NEUPOGEN (RTM) (Filgrastim) which is a recombinant human
granulocyte colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) for
use as an adjunct to chemotherapy for certain cancer patients.
NEUPOGEN is approved around the world for treating cancer
and in certain countries for use in reduction of the duration
of neutropenia following autologous and allogeneic bone
marrow transplantation and in the treatment of severe
chronic neutropenia. Amgen has also developed INFERGEN (RTM)
(interferon alfacon-1) for treating patients with hepatitis
C virus (HCV) and STEMGEN. Amgen has many other product
candidates undergoing clinical trial investigations including
novel erthyropoiesis stimulating protein (NESP) for treating
anaemia associated with chronic renal failure, R-568 for
treating secondary hyperparathyroidism, leptin for treating
obesity, tumour necrosis factor (TNF-bp) and interleukin-1
receptor antagonist (IL-1ra) for treating rheumatoid
arthritis (RA), glial derived neurotrophic factor
(GDNF) for treating Parkinson's disease and polyethylene
glycol megakaryocyte growth and development factor (PEG-
MGDF) for treating thrombocytopenia induced by high dose
chemotherapy. Amgen acquired Synergen on 31 December 1994.
