Invading Europe.
Source
Marketing Week, 14 June 2001, p. 53.
Text
1 OF 1.
The Mosaic Group's decision to close its European operations
is a stark reminder of the difficulties field marketing
companies face as they strive to offer clients a truly
international service.
Mosaic's continental Europe segment, which covers 11
countries, recorded a loss of $3.1m (#2.2m) in the fiscal year
2000. The group blamed this performance on the downturn in the
technology sector outside of the UK and the fragmentation of
the European market. The company also admits that without a
presence in Germany - which represents about 50 per cent of
the continent's field marketing trade - its activities were
always going to be hampered.
Most field marketers offer a pan-European service so that
clients can avoid the time-consuming process of having to
negotiate with local agencies on a territory-by-territory
basis. They warn brands that international campaigns can be
wrecked if the cultural differences between international
retailers and consumers are ignored. However, any agency must
evaluate the financial and service implications of managing a
network of offices across the continent or forming
partnerships with foreign agencies.

Would you have Tony in your set?
Source
The Lawyer, 11 June 2001, p. 1.
Text
1 OF 1.
Tony Blair may have won a landslide victory in last week's
election but the bar has fully endorsed his decision never to
return to practice by voting overwhelmingly that they would
not accept him as a tenant. Blair had told last week's Sunday
Times that whatever he did in the future he "would definitely
not go back to the bar". But in a survey of the UK's 20
leading chambers, conducted by The Lawyer, 12 would have
rejected his tenancy application anyway.
Only six sets would jump at the chance of having a former
Prime Minister in their ranks, and two were don't knows.
Blair was called to the bar in 1976. In 1981 he was one of
nine junior tenants who followed Lord Irvine of Lairg to form
11 King's Bench Walk, perhaps not surprisingly one of the
chambers to give the Prime Minister the thumbs-up.
James Goudie QC, the set's joint head of chambers, said: "Of
course we would (have him). He had a very successful practice
here, in both employment and commercial law, and we were very
sorry to lose him as such. All that is unusual is his length
of absence and the office he has held, but otherwise he could
come back and resume normal service." Others were less
generous. "No, we wouldn't take him here, he has nothing to
offer, " said one head of chambers.
Another said: "No, not because he's Tony, but we certainly
wouldn't collect him as a trophy. Opinion within chambers
would be divided and there would be a few of the 'over my dead
body' brigade."
A senior clerk said: "What do they (politicians) bring back to
chambers? In these days where we all panic about quality
control he is an unknown quantity."
However, John Powell QC, of 4 New Square, who himself stood as
a Labour candidate in 1979, would not only have him back at
the bar but would like him to contribute a chapter on
politicians and civil servants to his publication Jackson &
Powell on Professional Negligence.
Matrix Chambers, the set where his wife Cherie Booth QC is a
tenant, refused to comment.

Hosokawa's smooth answer to a sticky mixing problem.
Source
Process Engineering, 25 April 2001, p. 18.
Text
1 OF 1.
A specially designed combination mixer from Hosokawa Micron
has solved a long-standing production problem at British
Bakels in Oxfordshire. With the original mixers, very small
lumps of fat were formed in the mixed product, a range of
ingredients for bakery, confectionery and food products. The
lumps would appear as white spots in the final baked products,
so a deagglomerator had to be used after the mixer.
Tests at Hosokawa's test laboratory found that the best
results came by introducing the fat directly into the bulk and
breaking the agglomerates with a high speed rotating element.
This was achieved by combining a Vrieco-Nauta conical mixer
with an intensifier.
The intensifier is a high-speed mixing element that rotates in
the product at speeds of up to 40m/s. It brings the advantages
of a high- shear mixer into the Vrieco-Nauta, famous for its
gentle mixing action. Copyright: Centaur Communications Ltd.
