DataStar Datasheets:

CSNB - Chemical Safety NewsBase

Content

Worldwide information on the health and safety issues affecting
chemical and allied industries.

CSNB contains information on the hazards likely to be encountered
in the chemical and allied industries, in all types of
laboratories, and in the office. It will be of interest to
workers, safety officers, and all those concerned with health
and safety management.

The database includes information on:
. chemical reactions
. fires and explosions
. waste management
. transportation and storage of chemicals
. biological effects of chemicals on animals and microorganisms
. safe practices and equipment
. legislation and standards on industrial scale use of chemicals
. emergency planning
. laboratory design
. management and practice
. occupational health and hygiene
. office health and safety

USE CSNB to answer questions like:
- how do isocyanates affect asthma?
- what has been published on alternatives to asbestos?
- what information is available on accidents with needles or sharp
instruments and AIDS?
- what chemicals have been covered in the Safety-Practitioner's
series of data sheets since 1987?

Items on well known hazards are not included unless new information
is given.

Sources:
The Chemical Safety NewsBase corresponds to the printed Chemical
Hazards in Industry, Laboratory Hazards Bulletin and Hazards in
the Office.

About 250 primary journals are scanned; these include both
specialist occupational health publications and chemical,
biochemical, toxicological and medical research journals. Items
selected include full articles, books, audiovisual material,
technical reports, and references to conferences, courses, and
forthcoming events.

Abstract
A review of available literature regarding employment in pulp
and paper mills and the risk for malignant diseases.
Maintenance workers appear to be at increased risk for lung
cancer and malignant mesothelioma, indicating that this
occupational group was (is) exposed to asbestos. Workers
exposed to chlorine compounds also have increased risk of
lung cancer. An increased risk for malignant lymphomas is
a constant finding in pulp mill workers. The increased risk
is observed both amoung sulfite and sulfate workers
indicating a common exposure, which could be from dust,
terpenes or preservative present in the wood. Increased risk
for leukaemias and stomach cancers could not be attributed to
any particular etiological factor.
