DVDU-SUBSCRIBERSONLY - Derwent Veterinary Drug File (ceased updating 2001)

Content

The Derwent Veterinary Drug file covers the worldwide literature on
veterinary drug and vaccine development.

The database is available to subscribers only. To become a
subscriber, you should contact Derwent Information Ltd direct.

DVDU includes citations and abstracts on the evaluation and use of
veterinary drugs and vaccines in animals, in particular on
prevention and treatment of animal diseases, growth promotion, and
breeding manipulation, adverse effects, toxicology and analysis of
drugs and their interactions.

Each document contains an abstract written by a Derwent subject
specialist and is accompanied by extensive indexing allowing highly
specific retrieval. DVDU will be of particular interest to
information specialists and scientists involved with animal health
pharmaceuticals.

Use DVDU to find:
- references to treatment of Ehrlichia risticii in horses
- documents studying the effects of anabolic implants on carcass
characteristics in cattle
- references to the interaction between tiamulin and tylosin papers
- find all papers on paracetamol poisoning in rabbits and its
treatment
- information on the anaesthetic effect of saffan in cats

Abstract (A1 A2)
The efficacy of i.m. danofloxacin (DAN) in the treatment of
pneumonia associated with Pasteurella multocida and P.
haemolytica in housed cattle in Germany and Italy was examined.
DAN therapy was compared with trimethoprim/sulfa combinations in
the form of trimethoprim/sulfadoxine (Duoprim, Coopers-Anim
.Health; Borgal, Hoechst) or trimethoprim/sulfadiazine (Norodine,
Bayer). The clinical response to treatment with DAN was superior
to that seen in cattle treated with trimethoprim/sulfa, with
lower rectal temperatures. MIC values indicated that all isolates
of P. multocida and P. haemolytica were sensitive to DAN and the
majority were sensitive to trimethoprim/sulfa; resistance to
oxytetracycline, amoxicillin and erythromycin was prevalent.
73 Calves with clinical signs of acute pneumonia and increased
rectal temperatures were treated with 1.25 mg/kg DAN, i.m. ; 77
were treated with 4-20 mg/kg trimethoprim/sulfa drugs i.m. All
animals were treated once daily for 3 consecutive days or 5 days
depending on the response to treatment. DAN-treated calves had
lower rectal temperatures than those treated with trimethoprim
/sulfa drugs; these differences became significant on the 2nd and
3rd days of therapy. 24 Hr after the 3rd injection, 53 (69%) of
trimethoprim/sulfa-treated calves requiring 2 further days of
therapy, compared with only 39 (53%) of the DAN-treated calves.
24 Hr after completion of therapy, 77% of DAN-treated calves had
rectal temperatures of less than 39.5 deg and 71% judged clinical
normal, compared with 58% of trimethoprim/sulfa-treated calves
with 55% judged as clinically normal. During the post-treatment
period 21 (29%) DAN-treated calves met the re-treatment criteria
compared with 28 (36%) of trimethoprim/sulfa-treated calves. 1
Trimethoprim/sulfa-treated calf died before completion of
treatment. MIC values of P. haemolytica and P. multocida strains
isolated indicated that they were sensitive to DAN (MIC90 of 0.25
ug/ml). Only 6 (11%) of the P. haemolytica and 2 (5%) of the P.
multocida strains isolated were resistant to trimethoprim/sulfa
drugs (MIC greater than 2.0 ug/ml). MIC90 values of
oxytetracycline, amoxicillin and erythromycin indicated that
resistance to these agents among Pasteurella spp. were prevalent.

NOTES ON DVDU

Descriptor searching:
A standard name (e.g. INN, USAN, laboratory code) is used to
identify each drug. In addition the pharmacological classification
and the drug activity are also indexed. Search as:

1_: ANTIBIOTICS.DE.
2_: TYLOSIN.DE.

Or for a more specific search use descriptor with a drug or disease
two-letter qualifier and link using the WITH operator.

3_: PARACETAMOL WITH PH.DE.
