DataStar Datasheets:

DVOC - DH-Data Vocabulary

Content

This vocabulary file gives you access to the database of
controlled descriptor terms used by the Department of Health
(UK) to index items in the DH-Data database (DHSS). The
vocabulary is also used by the King's Fund database.

Typical of a thesaurus, not only the terms themselves are listed,
but also broader, narrower and related terms as appropriate. In
addition synonyms and scope notes indicate the concepts that are
covered by the term.

The hierarchical relationship of the descriptor terms listed in
DVOC is accessible in DHSS via an interactive thesaurus.
Refer to the database guide for DHSS for further
information on how to use the thesaurus functionality.

Notes on DVOC

SY - Synonyms (used for):
The terms listed here are not actual thesaurus terms but
indicate commonly-used concepts that are covered by the term
listed in DE. Some are displayed with a "+" sign, which shows
that more than one term would be needed to express the concept
in the Descriptor. For example, the Descriptor AFRICAN PEOPLE
contains several synonyms, one of which is AFRICAN CHILDREN +,
as children are a subset of the whole population.

RT - Related terms:
The terms listed here are other thesaurus terms which are
related to the term listed in DE.

When searching DVOC for an unfamiliar concept, you should not
qualify your search to a specific field, as you need to see how
your search term is used. For example, if the term only
appears in the SY field, an unqualified search will allow you
to see what the preferred search term (DE) should be.

RY - Document type:
All documents in DVOC are listed as 'DESCRIPTOR' in this
field. This field exists as a standard feature amongst all
Vocabulary files (AVOC, BVOC, EVOC, MVOC, NVOC, YVOC, etc.).

Guide:
A complete guide to the DH-Data Vocabulary database
can be found in the BASE database - search as BASE-DVOC.
