Country Background Part 1
Belgium is located in northwestern Europe and has boundaries
with the Netherlands to the north; Luxembourg and Germany to
the east; and, France to the south. The North Sea forms the
western coastline. The climate is temperate with mild winters
and cool summers, while the terrain comprises flat coastal
plains in the northwest, central rolling hills, and a
mountainous area in the southeast known as the Ardennes.
Belgium has been described as a "mini Europe", with its three
main linguistic communities, which also form separate
cultures. Flemish (a language closely related to Dutch)-
speaking Flanders in the north is home to approximately 58% of
the population; French is spoken by some 33% of the
population, in Wallonia in the south of the country; and,
Brussels, the capital and a region in its own right, has
bilingual status and comprises a further 9% of the population.
There is a small German-speaking community (less than 1% of
the population) in the east of the country.
