FSTA - Food Science & Technology Abstracts

Content

Food Science and Technology Abstracts (FSTA) offers a unique source
of information on food science, food technology and food-related
human nutrition from worldwide sources.

The Food Science and Technology Abstracts (FSTA) database is
produced by the International Food Information Service (IFIS),
which is an independent, not-for-profit organisation representing
four international partner organisations, CAB International in the
UK, the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) in the USA,
the Centrum voor Landbouwpublikaties en Landbouwdocumentatie (PUDOC)
in the Netherlands and the Deutsche Landwirtschafts-Gesellschaft
(DLG) in Germany.

The FSTA database condenses worldwide food literature and contains
bibliographic records (including abstracts) from 1969 to date. FSTA
covers literature on basic sciences relevant to food (biochemistry,
microbiology, toxicology, etc.) as well as biotechnology, food
safety, food processing, food products, patents, economics and
legislation. IFIS works hard to obtain those sources which are not
easily available.

Some 694,000 entries from approximately 4,600 sources which are
scanned regularly for the database are now accessible. The number of
records increases by approximately 2500 each month. The selection
criteria are significance, relevance and scientific excellence. FSTA
is the most prestigious and comprehensive food database and is of
interest to everyone working in the food sector, e.g at universities
or colleges, in the food industry, at food research institutes, or
in government departments.

Use FSTA to answer questions like:
-What are the latest technologies employed in the detection of
genetically modified DNA in food?
-What has been published on vanilla flavour technology? Has
anything been published in Spanish?
- What food colorants are permitted in specific EU countries?
- What are the risks of foodborne disease in cooked-chilled foods?

Sources:
Approximately 4,600 sources, 4,500 being journals, are
indexed and abstracted for FSTA. The sources originate from as many
as 90 different countries and over 40 languages are covered. In
addition to periodical publications, the database also covers
standards, patents, legislation, conference proceedings and
specifically relevant monographs.
Approximately 600 references are added per update.

Notes on FSTA

To see the population of each field Root on the field label,
followed by equals, eg: ..root DE=
To see how many documents the database holds type in DOCZ.
AN - Accession number & update date
The numbers come in two formats depending on whether IFIS sends the
document in a weekly or monthly update. However, the Datastar update
is the last date, and the only one relevant for searching.
TI - Title of article:
Where the original article is in a language other than English, the
title is translated into English, and displayed in brackets.
For articles written in German, as well as book publications in any
non-English language, the document also displays the title in the
original language.

SO - Source of publication:
Quick code SO= will list journal articles only. For all other
publication types Root on the source name.

1_: ..root SO=
2_: ..root GUMS .SO.
Patents do not have an SO field; search PA

PA - Patent information:
This field contains the Patent Assignee, the owner of the patent, and
the Application number of the patent. For the inventor search the
AU field, by 'Inventor' or personal name.

1_:COGNIS$.PA.

AU - Author
Contains authors and inventors. The term 'inventor' is searchable, so
will retrieve all patents. This field can be searched free text, but
the best method is to root on AU.

2_:INVENTOR WITH ESCUDERO$.AU.

DE - Descriptors
These are terms reflecting the major concepts within the document.
Index terms are drawn from the FSTA thesaurus, plus non-controlled
phrases on approximately 5% of documents. This is a reducing
percentage as non-controlled terms are no longer being applied.
The interactive thesaurus is available online (using commands
..THES, ..TREE and ..EXPL) Further information about each term
is available in the FVOC database.
Descriptor terms are double posted. For example FAT.DE. will
retrieve articles indexed to FAT, but also FAT-BEADS, FAT-CANNED,
FAT-CHEESE etc.
To restrict your search to a single term, FAT, qualify with .W.

1_: FAT.DE.
2_: 1.DE..W.

Use the online thesaurus (..THES) to select terms.

3_: ..THES FAT

THES FAT$
R1 Low-Fat-Foods --> Fats-Low-Foods
R2 2 Milk-Fat-Globule-Membranes
R3 2 Milk-Fat-Globules
R4 Fat-Mimetics --> Fat-Substitutes
R5 Fat-Replacers --> Fat-Substitutes
R6 Solids-Not-Fat --> Snf
R7 Low-Fat-Spreads --> Fats-Low-Spreads
R8 # Fat-Substitutes
R9 # Fats

then select the appropriate R number

4_: R1, R4-R5

When searching multi-word index terms you can also search using
hyphens, or operators eg: ADJ or WITH, and qualify to .DE.

5_: MILK-FAT-GLOBULES
6_: FAT ADJ SUBSTITUTES.DE.

To search on all terms below your term in the hierarchy, you can
either use has (#) or ..THES and select terms with #.

7_: MARINE-OILS#
or
8_: ..THES MARINE

THES MARINE$
R1 # 3 Marine-Fish
R2 # Marine-Oils
END OF THES

D-S - SEARCH MODE - ENTER SEARCH TERMS
1_: r2#

To see the three trees containing the term MARINE-FISH use ..TREE R1

SC - Section
Use these to define the context of your search.
This is an FSTA hierarchy of broader and narrower codes and terms.
To see both codes and terms Root on SC= The codes cover exactly the
same as the terms, so for ease select terms.Narrower terms will
retrieve items from 1998+, broader terms cover the whole database.

DT - Date
This field is for Datastar standardisation, so will always only have
the year followed by four zeros.

Alerts: Are available in FSTA.

..RANK and ..MAP: Are available in the AU, DT, YR paragraph.

Guides:
The Guide is available online in BASE - search BASE-FSTA.
