The Gale Directory of Databases provides detailed information on
publicly available databases and database products accessible
through an online vendor or batch processor or available for direct
lease, license, or purchase as a CD-ROM, diskette, magnetic tape, or
handheld product.
GDDB continues and expands upon the former Cuadra Directory of
Databases (CUAD), which was acquired by Gale Research Inc. in 1991
and made available on DataStar.
GDDB covers more than 9,800 databases and database products of all
types in all subject areas produced worldwide in English and other
languages by more than 3,400 database producers and offered by some
1,800 online services and database vendors and distributors.
Database listings provide complete details about the content and
availability of a database, while producer and vendor listings
provide address and contact information, a list of available
databases, and other details.
There are three document types:
Database: For each database, the listing contains information on the
content and subject coverage, type, language, timespan,
update frequency, geographic coverage, producer contact
information, and vendor availability. For online
databases, provides file label, rates, and alternate
electronic formats (such as CD-ROM or diskette). For
portable database products, provides price, software, and
system requirements.
Producer: For each producer, the listing contains address,
telecommunications numbers (phone, fax, toll-free, telex,
and E-mail), former names, and branch offices, plus a list
of available databases or database products.
Vendor: For each vendor, the listing contains address,
telecommunications numbers (phone, fax, toll-free, telex,
and E-mail), former names, and branch offices, plus a list
of available databases or database products. For online
vendors (or hosts), includes information on conditions of
access, networks used, and gateway access. For portable
vendors, includes a list of distributors.
GDDB is an essential tool for all information professionals and
others involved in database searching.
Use GDDB to answer questions like:
- which databases provide information on Australian companies?
- what is the address of the producer of Le Monde?
- which database products are available as WILSONDISC products?
- which online services have the Who Owns Whom database?
Sources:
Gale Research Inc. obtains information directly from the database
producers and vendors. It is edited and checked by Gale's own
editorial staff. The database is reloaded completely, with revised
data and new listings, every six months.
