Abstract
This report aims to evaluate the size and structure of the UK
market for confectionery. The analysis examines the industry in
terms of its two principal constituent sectors, namely chocolate
and sugar confectionery. Trend in sales of the various types of
confectionery and the main confectionery brands are discussed.
The power of the main manufacturers in the marketplace is
assessed and purchasing and consumption patterns are examined.
Future growth trends are predicted. Consideration is also given
to the most notable development of 1988, that is Nestle's
acquisition of Rowntree.

1 OF 18 1. INDUSTRY STRUCTURE
BACKGROUND
The UK confectionery market has been growing steadily since the
1930s. In value terms, it is now the UK's largest packaged food
sector with an annual turnover of L3bn.
Whilst consumer expenditure on food has doubled in the last ten
years, expenditure on confectionery has trebled.

The market has now attained a state of maturity - between 1986
and 1987 it only grew by around 2% in both volume and value
terms. Significant volume growth was maintained for the first
five years of

2 OF 18 INDUSTRY STRUCTURE CONTINUED
INDUSTRY SECTORS
The confectionery market is commonly divided into two sectors:
chocolate and sugar confectionery. This segmentation has come
about as a result of the industry's structure.
Although the large chocolate companies also produce some sugar
confectionery, manufacturers tend to specialise in one or the
other sector.
CHOCOLATE CONFECTIONERY
Chocolate confectionery accounts for 69% of total confectionery
(...)
3 OF 18 2. CUSTOMER PROFILE
Although it is a non-essential foodstuff, confectionery is
regularly purchased by a very high proportion of the population.
It is bought as an indulgence, a gift or a snack. Rowntree
estimates that as much as 70% of all confectionery purchases are
made on impulse.

businesses. The disposal has had an extremely beneficial effect
on profit performance. There was an

9 OF 18 4. MARKET SIZE AND TRENDS
In volume terms, the total market for confectionery grew steadily
between 1980 and 1985. Following the downturn in 1986, discussed
in Section 1, confectionery volumes in 1987 were nearly restored
to the high level of 1985. Chocolate output has gradually been
increasing at
(...)
10 OF 18 MARKET SIZE AND TRENDS CONTINUED
According to the BCCCA, confectionery prices experienced
singularly modest increases in 1987, averaging just over 2%.
This sharp fall in confectionery inflation may be accounted for
by the low cost of raw materials, increased efficiency on the
part of the manufacturers and by intensifying competition within
the trade. Inflation on all goods stood at 4.2% in 1987 and the
fact that

12 OF 18 6. FUTURE PROSPECTS
INTERNAL DEVELOPMENTS
As in other industries, the larger British confectionery
companies are discovering that the price to be paid for success
is the risk of takeover. By the 1990s the world confectionery
market will be in the hands of fewer companies and there is a
strong probability that the UK chocolate industry will be in the
control of overseas companies.
