INSP - Inspec

Content

Content:
The major source of worldwide literature on physics, electronics
and electrical engineering, computers and control and
information technology.

Inspec consists of five sections:
A - Physics - including acoustics, geophysics, environmental
science, materials science, nuclear physics and
thermodynamics.
B - Electrical and Electronic Engineering - including circuits
and components, microwave technology, radio and television,
signal processing and telecommunications.
C - Computing and Control - including artificial intelligence,
control theory and technology, neurocomputing and quantum
computing.
D - Information Technology - including business, banking and
insurance, facsimile, office automation and
teleconferencing.
E - Mechanical, manufacturing and production engineering -
design, production technology, measurement and testing,
manufacturing resources and products, materials handling and
distribution, industrial sectors.

All records are indexed using a number of subject indexes
Including the Inspec Classification Codes and Inspec Thesaurus
terms

Use INSP to answer questions like:
- what research has been carried out into adding hyperlinks to
digital television?
- how is office automation being applied in the academic
community?
- what has been published on the photoneutron method in marine
geophysics?
- how are fuzzy logic operators used in decision-making?

Sources:
Inspec draws information from over 3,700 journals, of which 750
major titles are abstracted cover-to-cover. Whilst the main
emphasis is journal articles and papers presented at
conferences, significant books, book chapters, technical reports
and dissertations are also included. A small number of GB and US
patents were included before 1977.

AB - Abstract
We present new (2000 April) MERLIN observations of the H/sub
2/ observations detect many of the structures found in
earlier (1996) Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations
of Torrelles and collaborators, and the changed positions of
these structures are compatible with the VLBA proper motions
and astrometric uncertainties. The radius of curvature of the
R4 structure of maser arcs appears to have grown by a factor
of 2, and the displacement of the arcs between 1996 and 2000
is compatible with expansion about a common center.

AB - Abstract
A promising mechanical bearing candidate for active operation
is the tilting-pad bearing. The active tilting-pad bearing
has linear actuators that radially translate each pad/pivot
pair. The use of feedback control is determining the actuator
forces allows for the automatic, continuous adjustment of the
pad position during the operations of the rotating machine.

Notes on INSP

INSP/IN86/IN79/INYY vs. IN68:
All Inspec subfiles on DataStar are identical in structure, however
some fields are not populated in the IN68 archive - namely PR, IN,
MJ, NI, CI, AI, TC, AV and CP. Equally, images (IM field) are only
available in the IN68 archive.

CF - Conference information:
The title, date, location and sponsor of the conference. The
title of the conference may be repeated in both TI and in SO.

PA/PR - Patent/Priority information:
Patent and priority information is only populated in the database up
to 1976.

Patent publication date is also copied to the DT paragraph for
patent-type documents.

DE - Descriptors - Inspec Thesaurus Terms:
The DE paragraph contains descriptors from the Inspec Thesaurus,
which consists of just over 10000 controlled terms. These terms
also are available in their own DataStar database - IVOC.

Use the thesaurus terms to produce the most accurate search
results.

The terms are 'double-posted'. For example, GLASS.DE. will retrieve
not only articles indexed to GLASS, but also those on SPIN-GLASSES,
SEMICONDUCTOR-DOPED-GLASSES, GLASS-FIBRES, etc.

If you wish to restrict your search to the single term GLASS,
use the .W. qualifier:

1_: GLASS.W..DE.

You can also use the interactive thesaurus features to display lists
of terms in a specific subject area, or to see how preferred terms
relate to one another in the thesaurus hierarchy. On DataStar
Classic, use the ..THES, ..EXPL and ..TREE commands:

2_: ..THES GLASS

This will display a list of all preferred terms in the thesaurus
containing the word GLASS.

3_: ..EXPL SPIN-GLASSES

This will 'explode' the hierarchies in the thesaurus containing this
specific term, showing how SPIN-GLASSES relates to other terms -
i.e.:

T1 # . Magnetism
T2 # .. Magnetic-Materials
T3 ... Spin-Glasses

T4 # . Materials
T5 # .. Magnetic-Materials
T6 ... Spin-Glasses
END OF EXPLOSION

For in-depth information on thesaurus functionality in Inspec, refer
to the appendices at the end of the online guide - see below.

On DataStar Web (Advanced Search only) you can select thesaurus
terms for searching from the 'Inspec Thesaurus - browse terms' and
'Inspec Thesaurus - enter a term' drop-down lists.

NI - Numerical indexing:
On DataStar Classic it is alos possible to search for a specific
value as displayed in the document - by putting the decimalised
number in inverted commas, e.g.:

4_: TEMPERATURE WITH '9.23E02'.NI.

If a quantity is given as a range of values, it is possible to
retrieve these by searching not only the lower and higher
magnitudes, but also any of the magnitudes in between. For
example:

NI frequency: 5.0E01 to 1.0E09 Hz.

This can be retrieved by searching as:

5_: FREQUENCY WITH MAG=01
6_: FREQUENCY WITH MAG=09

But also:

7_: FREQUENCY WITH MAG=05 (or any value between 01 and 09)

IM - Image(s):
Images are only available in the pre-1969 archive of the database.

These images are only viewable via Web-based interfaces: DataStar
Web or DataStar Classic on the Web.

Additionally, note that the IM field is included in the ALL print
format only.

Search option:
..SET PLURALS ON can be selected in INSP.

The full guide to Inspec is available online in the BASE database -
search as BASE-INSP.

Terms & Conditions

Terms and conditions:
Inspec data may not be duplicated in hard copy or stored or
duplicated in machine-readable form without written authorisation
from The IET, London, except that data may be temporarily stored
(for up to one month) in machine- readable form for re-formatting or
editing and that limited reproduction of printed output up to
twenty-five (25) copies is permitted for distribution within the
customers organisation only. Under no circumstances may copies made
under this provision be offered for resale.
