STRATEGY STATEMENT : INTRODUCTION

BMS Looks to Renewed Growth in 2007

Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMS) markets ethical drugs, medical
devices, has had various problems in recent years: a major drug
in R&D had serious side-effects and has now been sidelined, there
was an investigation into accounting irregularities, and now many
of its products are facing or have experienced patent expiry,
with some analysts wondering if lost sales can be made up by
increasing sales of other marketed products and the launch of new
ones. BMS has now fallen out of the world's top five
pharmaceutical corporate groups, to be ranked number nine in
2004, according to IMS.

In 2003, BMS' board of directors approved CEO Peter Dolan's
five-year plan, backing the recovery program he has developed.
This plan involves return-on-investment measurements across the
company, a revamp of internal controls and costs, and the launch
of new drugs to boost sales. In addition, there is now an
increasing focus away from general primary care drugs and towards
high-tech products which fulfill significant unmet need in
serious illnesses, predominantly treated by specialists. Many of
its new products and products nearing the market (such as Abilify
and Orencia) are geared towards specialists than general
practitioners. Because of this shift in product focus, BMS is
undergoing a major shift in strategy, moving away from selling to
mass-market primary care physicians in favor of selling to
specialists, such as oncologists and psychiatrists. A company
selling to specialists needs fewer sales people, which should
mean better margins. In October 2004, BMS announced plans to lay
off 500 salespeople.

STRATEGY STATEMENT : REGIONAL STRATEGY

Aims to Boost Global Presence

BMS has sought to bolster its global pharmaceutical business in
markets, especially China and Latin America. It also hopes to
expand its presence in Japan, with growth driven by new oncology
and antiviral therapies. BMS is looking to achieve sales of over
Yen100 billion (around $950 million). At the moment, BMS's
business is US-biased, with 55% of total sales made in the USA in
2004 (compared to 68% in 2001). A breakdown by geographical
region for 2005 is not yet available.

STRATEGY STATEMENT : THERAPEUTIC FOCUS

Patent Exposure is Major Problem for BMS

According to IMS, main therapeutic areas for BMS in terms of
sales inhibitors, HIV antivirals, "all other antineoplastics"
(class L1X) and vinca alkaloids. BMS is currently feeling the
impact of patent expirations. It has recently lost exclusivity
for some important products and in the 2004-2008 period eight
major drugs will see patent expiry: Pravachol, Paraplatin, Zerit,
Glucovance, Glucophage XR, Cefzil, Videx and Tequin.

Paraplatin, Glucophage XR, Glucovance and Videx are already open
to generic competition, as are the cancer drugs Taxol
(paclitaxel) and Paraplatin (carboplatin), and the ACE inhibitor
Monopril (fosinopril). Meanwhile generic competition is on the
horizon for Zerit (from 2007 in some markets, 2008 in the USA),
Cefzil (patents outside the US began expiring in 2004 and the
patent expired in the USA in December 2005), Tequin (December
2007 in the USA and 2007 and later outside) and Pravachol
(already expired in some markets, with expiry in the USA set for
April 2006).
