DataStar Datasheets:

IPIP - IMS Patent Focus

Content

IMS Health Patents International is the most comprehensive source of
evaluated product patent family data for pharmaceuticals worldwide.

IPIP contains product patent family data for over 3,000 commercially
significant drugs. It is the only product patent database that
allows access by generic or trade name which contains commercially
significant drugs (including those already marketed or in Phase III
clinical trials or above). Each document gives details of drug name,
therapeutic class, registry numbers and patent data including
estimated expiry dates, priority details, originator and originator
country.

Use IPIP to:
- find which beta-blockers come off patent in the UK between 1999
and 2005
- track down ACE inhibitors which originated in Japan
- locate the owner of a particular drug, and find where it is
patented.
- determine the product patent for cimetidine in the UK and US

Sources:
IPIP is compiled from IMS databases e.g. R&D Focus and MIDAS,
original patent specifications, Patent Office journals, and various
online and hard copy secondary sources of patent and chemical
information.

General comments
Glaxo and Beecham synthesised clavulanic acid and its salts
independently. Beecham obtained patent rights in most countries,
as the Beecham patents have the earliest priority date. However,
in the USA Glaxo obtained product patent rights to the potassium
salt (US 4367175), the lithium salt (US 4490294) and the sodium
salt (US 4490295) of clavulanic acid. All rights to these patents
have been reassigned from Glaxo to Beecham - see separate entry
for the Glaxo patents. Beecham has claims to synergistic
compositions of clavulanic acid in the following related patents:
Austria 353407 (appln 77/2053); Canada 1055395; East Germany
132297; Sweden 446687 (appln 78/11201); West Germany 2559411; USA
nos 4525352, 4525353, 4526783, 4560552.
Country comments
USA patent no 4529720 is a method of use patent. Beecham has
claims to compositions of potassium clavulanate with amoxicillin
trihydrate in US 4537887, published 27 August 1985, normal expiry
27 August 2002. Beecham has claims to compositions of potassium
clavulanate with amoxicillin trihydrate with enhanced stability
in US 4441609, published 10 April 1984, normal expiry 10 April
2001.
