LINE - Pharm-line

Content

Content:

Pharm-line is produced by the regional and national Medicines
Information Centres of the United Kingdom National Health
Service.

The original focus of Pharm-line was on clinical pharmacy, with
relevant papers from medical and pharmacy journals abstracted
to provide a single database to meet the requirements of a
local hospital's Medicines Information Centre. In view of the
wide availability of other databases with content in this area,
it was decided some time ago that this objective was no longer
appropriate and the emphasis has been gradually changed towards
providing evidence to support pharmacy, prescribing and
medicines management in both primary and secondary care. This
trend will continue, informed by surveys of subscribers and of
other users of medicines information. A further development in
recent years has been the indexing of papers presented at
pharmacy-related conferences in the UK, continental Europe, the
USA and Australia.

Papers referring principally to animal or laboratory studies
are excluded.

Pharm-line is produced jointly by a working party of drug
information specialists at the UK National Health Service's
(NHS) Medicines Information Centres. The aim of the working
party is to offer a contextually defined and goal-directed
database as well as rapid access to published drug literature
through Pharm-line.

Currently some 11-12,000 documents are loaded each year. Some
90% of documents in the database contain abstracts - either
written by the author, or prepared by specialist abstractors.

Use LINE to answer questions like:
- What are the effects of pharmacists' actions (especially
discharge counselling) on patients' compliance?
- What reports have been published of pregnancy following
failure of oral contraceptives due to interactions with other
drugs?
- What measures have been discussed to regulate drug supply via
the Internet?
- What systematic reviews have been published comparing the
different 'triptans'?
- What problems have been reported with use of
phenylpropanolamine in patients on antihypertensives?

Sources:
Approximately 100 English-language periodicals (not necessarily
UK-focused) are selectively abstracted and indexed for Pharm-
line, together with relevant conference proceedings. In
addition to original articles, letters to the editor (if they
contain new information or comment on a previous original
report), reviews, news items and editorials are also included.

AB - Abstract
Case report of an HIV-seropositive homosexual patient where
liver function changes and an exanthematous rash were
observed 15 days after introduction of treatment with
abacavir (Trizivir). Given the hepatitis and cutaneous
eruption, a hypersensitivity reaction to abacavir was
suspected. Treatment was stopped but no improvement was
observed. Finally, syphilitic hepatitis syphilitique was
diagnosed, and improvement was seen with benzathine-
penicillin and Trizivir was reintroduced without problems.
Clinicians should note the possibility of syphilitic
hepatitis, accompanied or not by cutaneous eruptions.
