Manual, Alternative and Natural Therapy(TM) - MANTIS - is a
bibliographic database that provides coverage for health care
disciplines not significantly represented in the major biomedical
databases.
MANTIS emphasises health promotion, prevention, and conservative and
alternative therapies, including
. acupuncture . homeopathy
. allopathic medicine . naturopathy
. alternative medicine . osteopathic medicine
. chiropractic . physical therapy
. herbal medicine . traditional Chinese medicine
Particular emphasis is placed on research relating to the aetiology,
physiopathology, diagnosis, and treatment of neuromsculoskeletal
conditions (low back pain, headache, scoliosis, nerve compression
syndromes, sports injuries, etc.)
Use MANTIS to answer such questions as:
- how safe is cervical manipulation?
- is manipulation effective in treating acute low back pain?
- what are the current research findings on medicinal plants?
- what randomised controlled trials exist for homeopathy?
- what traditional Chinese medicines or acupuncture points are
effective for headaches?
Sources:
Virtually all peer reviewed journals from manual, chiropractic, and
osteopathic medicine are indexed for MANTIS. International in
coverage, the database contains references from over 1,000 journals.
Approximately 70% of documents in the database have abstracts. The
National Library of Medicine's Medical Subject Headings (MeSH)
supplemented by descriptor terms specific to the areas of
alternative medicine are used to index all material added to the
database.

Approximately 500 scientists from around the world attended the
43rd Congress on Medicinal Plant Research held in Halle (Saale)
Germany, September 3-7, 1995. Sponsored jointly this year by the
Gesellschaft fur Arzneipflanzenforschung and Martin Luther
University, these annual congresses draw scientists from many
countries because all proceedings and presentations take
place in the universally understood English language.

Title
Acupuncture Treatment of Chronic Tension Headache--A

Abstract
In a controlled trial the effect of traditional Chinese
acupuncture v. placebo acupuncture was evaluated in 18
patients with chronic tension headache (mean disease duration
15 years). All patients suffered from daily or frequently
recurring headache, the intensity of which was recorded by the
patient over a period of 15 weeks. Each patient was treated by
traditional Chinese acupuncture as well as by placebo acupuncture
in a cross-over design following randomization. Each period of
treatment comprised six treatments. Traditional Chinese
acupuncture was found to be significantly more pain-relieving than
placebo acupuncture, according to the pain registration of the
patients themselves. The pain reduction was 31%. Acupuncture
is therefore found to be a reasonable treatment for chronic
tension headache.
