Reliable, unbiased, and evaluated information on drugs and medicines
used throughout the world.
Produced by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain,
Martindale has been the reference source of choice for practising
pharmacists and physicians since 1883 when the first edition was
published.
In addition to drugs and medicines, the database provides selected
investigational and veterinary drugs, herbal medicines,
pharmaceutical excipients, vitamins and nutritional agents,
vaccines, radiopharmaceuticals, contrast media and diagnostic
agents, medicinal gases, drugs of abuse and recreational drugs,
toxic substances, disinfectants, and pesticides are also included,
making Martindale an invaluable resource in all branches of
pharmaceutical science.
Martindale is regularly updated to ensure that it continues to meet
the information requirements of practitioners of medicine and
pharmacy. Information is derived from published sources and is
presented as sections of text with supporting referenced abstracts
and reviews.
The following information relating to drugs is covered: definitions
and descriptions, pharmacokinetics, adverse effects and treatments,
uses, precautions, administration, interactions, tradenames of
preparations.
Additionally, Martindale also contains disease treatment reviews
which provide overviews of diseases and the choice of treatments
available.
Details of commercial preparations from a wide range of countries
are searchable by tradename with cross-references to monographs for
their active ingredients where fuller information is given. A
directory of manufacturers of drug preparations worldwide, together
with their addresses, is included.
Use Martindale to answer questions like:
- what are the adverse effects associated with Fluticasone
Propionate?
- can antimuscarinic drugs be used in the treatment of gastro-
intestinal disorders?
- what is the molecular formula of Benzhexol Hydrochloride?
- in Thailand, a preparation called Abacus is available; what is it,
what are its properties, who manufactures it, and what is it used
to treat?
- are there any drugs which are useful in the treatment of hiccups?
- what are the constituent ingredients of the preparation Arelcant?
- what preparations are marketed by GlaxoSmithKline in Hong Kong?
Sources:
Sources covered by the database are: journals and periodicals,
licensed product literature, WHO publications, government reports
and legislation and other official and standard publications.

Antimuscarinics, including atropine, hyoscine, and
glycopyrronium, have been used pre-operatively to inhibit
salivation and excessive secretions of the respiratory tract
during anaesthesia (3100-a4-45-v). This use is less
important now that less irritating anaesthetics are usedà

Retrieval of all documents relating to a single drug:
As in the old version, to retrieve all documents relating to a
single drug, you will need to use the accession number stem. In the
new MART, these accession numbers are now clearer and easier to use.
If you retrieve a document that is part of a drug-monograph and you
want to retrieve the rest of the information about the drug cited,
check the XR (Cited references) field where the accession number
stem is given, e.g.:
1 MART

prolactin concentrations have been reported in men during
cimetidine treatment (1) as have gynaecomastia, breast
tenderness, and impotence...

AT Adverse-Effects.
ED Revision date: 19960920; 19980304; 20000811.
Note that the accession number begins with the stem '6117-$'.
This can be searched in three ways:
_: 6117-$.AN.
This retrieves the 47 documents in the database which make up the
Cimetidine Drug Monograph in the hard-copy Martindale, or:
_: 6117-$.XR.
This retrieves the Cimetidine Drug Monograph documents, plus a
further 12 'treatment-review' documents in which Cimetidine is
referred to.
_: 6117-$
This retrieves 347 documents. It includes the drug monograph, the
treatment reveiws plus other documents in which Cimetidine is
mentioned - including those which cover the interaction of the drug
with other drugs, and 'preparation' type documents which include
Cimetidine as an ingredient.
