The National Technical Information Service (NTIS) provides access to
the results of both US and foreign Government-sponsored R&D and
engineering activities and can provide the technical report for most
of the results which it announces.
NTIS summarises more than 60,000 new items every year. These
research studies are sponsored by both US and foreign governments.
This material includes:
. Research results
. Directories and handbooks
. Technical manuals
. Software
. Conference presentations and proceedings
. Statistics
NTIS also manages the Federal Computer Products Center which
provides access to software, datafiles and databases produced by
Federal agencies and the Center for the Utilization of Federal
Technology which prepares a variety of directories, catalogues and
other information products linking US firms to key US government
technologies, inventions available for licensing and laboratory
contacts. Through agreements with hundreds of organisations, new R&D
efforts are announced from countries such as Japan, West Germany,
Great Britain, France and other leading industrialised nations.
Use NTIS to answer questions like:
- what recent information is available on developments in optical
fibre technology?
- what has been written since 1992 on the dispersal of oil
spillages?
- has anything been written concerning the Sellafield nuclear
facility in the UK?
- what developments have there been in coal mining technology?
Sources:
The database summarises reports produced by more than 600 Federal
agencies or their contractors, including the Department of Commerce,
Department of Defense, Department of Energy, Department of
Transportation, Environmental Protection Agency, National
Aeronautics and Space Administration, National Institute of
Standards and Technology, National Institute of Health.
A third of the information cited in the NTIS Bibliographic Database
is from government sources, with particular emphasis on technology
of interest for US business.

Abstract
In compliance with the procedures and goals established by the
National Environmental Policy Act, the US Department of the
Interior, through the Minerals Management Service, prepares
Environmental Impact Statements (EIS's) and other documentation
for proposed Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) Oil and Gas Lease
Sales. The report discusses the major issues and areas of concern
for the mid-Atlantic environment that are considered in the
planning process for oil and gas leasing and operation on the
OCS. The issues are addressed with respect to the potential
environmental consequences of mid-Atlantic oil and gas
exploration, development, and production.
