PASC - Pascal

Content

PASCAL is one of the world's leading sources of Life and Physical
Sciences information.

PASCAL is produced by the Institut de l'Information Scientifique et
Technique (INIST) of the French National Research Council (CNRF).
It provides access to the world's scientific and technical
literature including pure and applied biology, homeopathy, medicine,
botany, psychology, pharmacology, toxicology, biotechnology, and
agriculture, physics, chemistry, information sciences,
telecommunications, construction industry, mechanical engineering,
metallurgy, earth sciences, oceanography, and astronomy, About
500,000 new citations are added to PASC each year in these diverse
disciplines. French and European literature are particularly well
represented in PASCAL. The database includes references to journal
articles, patents, theses and conference proceedings.

Over 75% of documents have an abstract and all have an English
language title. PASCAL is well indexed to aid subject retrieval in
this multi-disciplinary file, several classification schemes are
used and controlled descriptors from a vocabulary of over 80,000
terms are added in English, French and Spanish.

Texts from all over the world in 100 different languages are
analysed for inclusion in PASCAL. The coverage in PASC by language
is approximately as follows: English 63%, French 12%, Russian 10%,
German 8%, and other languages 7%. INIST also offers a free,
multilingual and multidisciplinary guide to scientific terminology
at <http://www.termsciences.fr>

Use PASC to find information on:
- what papers have been published by Havemann working in Marburg
University, Germany?
- methods used for controlling pests in beet growing, and which
insecticides are currently undergoing field trials;
- the effectiveness of diet on controlling diabetes;
- Quantum mechanical studies on spin.

Sources:
Literature of all types is abstracted in PASCAL: journal articles
(about 93% of the file), theses (mainly French, 5,000 per year),
conference proceedings, technical reports, books, patents (until
1980, and in biotechnology since 1983). Over 6,500 journals are
scanned regularly and over 4,500 of these are abstracted completely.

Abstract
In two different experiments, serotonin (5-HT) and 5-
hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) levels were measured in rats,
using HPLC with electrochemical detection, in 3 brain regions
(hippocampus, cerebral cortex and hypothalamus) after acute i.p.
treatment with diazepam (4 mg/kg), alprazolam (1.25 mg/kg) or
vehicle. Results of the acute treatment alone showed a
significant increase in 5-HT levels in hippocampus and cerebral
cortex, and a decrease in hypothalamus, but not differences in
5-HIAA levels, for the diazepam- and alprazolam-treated groups.
After handling-habituation, no effect in the monoamine or
metabolite levels appeared when the rats were treated with
diazepam or alprazolam.

Notes on PASC

Search Options:
..SET PLURALS ON and ..SET MEDWORD ON can be selected in PASC.

..MAP and ..RANK are available in AU and SO paragraphs.

June 2008: the IP is providing a new version of PASCAL so PASC
will be completely reloaded. The new version will differ from the
old one as follows:

- no patent information will be supplied, so paragraphs PA, PN
AP and PR will be removed
- new paragraphs will be included for original language title
(TT), conference information (CF), corporate author (CA),
author keywords (KW), subject headings (SH), country of
publication (CN), DOI (DO), publication date (DT), and entry
date (ED)
- classification codes in CC will be broken down into new
sub-paragraphs Pascal code (PA), Francis code (FR), Sigle code
(SI), Environment code (EN) and Physics/Astrophysics code (PC)
- upposted terms will now be included in DE so paragraph UT will
be removed
- publisher information will now be included in SO so paragraph
PU will be removed
- bibliographic notes and numbers of references will now be
included in SO so paragraph NT will be removed
- the order of paragraphs will be rearranged to fit the current
DataStar standard display

Your Alerts and saved searches should not be affected, unless you
have specific qualification to the paragraphs which will be
removed.
