Content

PHIND, the Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Industry News Database,
produces up-to-date intelligence about product developments,
markets, regulatory affairs and other matters of importance to the
international pharmaceutical, medical device, veterinary and

US instrument industry maintains double-digit growth.
SO - Source
Instrumenta, 17 December 2008.
AU - Author(s)
Jonathan Hare.
TX - Text
The first half of calendar 2008 saw a continuation of the
double-digit growth seen in the same period last year, as the US
analytical instrumentation industry continued to bounce back from
the poor export and import growth of 2006, when the market hit a
four-year low (see Instrumenta24(4) 14). However, the figures
were slightly under the total growth for last year, when export
and import growth reached 15% and 17%, respectively.

US exports of analytical instrumentation in the first six months
of the year grew by 13% from last year according to figures from
the United States International Trade Commission (USITC) for
product code 90277 under the international Harmonised Tariff
Schedule (instruments and apparatus for physical and chemical
analysis), reaching $3.32 billion. (...)

Exports

The German market, which faltered last year with only 1% growth,
rebounded strongly in the period with growth of 15%, taking it to
$466.4 million and making it responsible for purchasing 14% of
total US instrumentation exports. Canada remained in second place
as a market for the US, buying 13% more equipment than the prior
year, at $355.7 million.

After an unexpected 15% growth last year, sales to the United
Kingdom see-sawed back to the declining pattern of the recent
years, falling 4% from the first half of last year to $163.8
million. However, the French market maintained its double-digit
growth, taking product worth $131.4 million, a rise of 16%.
(...)

Subcategories

All major categories of instrumentation grew during the first
half of the year, and in all but one, this was in the double-
digits.

Exports of mass spectrometers (MS) manufactured in the US rose by
22% during the period, to $247.0 million, outpacing the 16%
growth of last year, while imports were up only 7% to $141.5
million. Demand for Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) instruments
fell, however, exports down 2% to $13.6 million and imports
falling by 10% to $18.6 million. (...)

In the accompanying table, some adjustments and combinations or
Product categories have been necessary, in order for a proper
comparison to be made.

Bayer acquires Maxygen and Topsun portfolios (F).

TX - Text
Bayer Healthcare has acquired a haemophilia product programme
from Maxygen and a cough and cold portfolio from Topsun Science
and Technology.

Maxygen's haemophilia programme includes the recombinant Factor
VIIa protein, Maxy-VII, which is expected to enter Phase I
clinical trials this year. Bayer will pay Maxygen $90 million
upfront and a possible $30 million in milestone payments. The
agreement includes a licence for Bayer to use Maxygen's molecular
breeding technology for exploiting gene targets and Bayer will
receive exclusive rights to use the technology for 30 specified
gene targets in areas of strategic business interest. Maxy-VII
has the potential to become the world's first approved shuffled
protein drug, and is likely to open up more opportunities for the
smaller US-based Maxygen, Russell Howard, CEO of the company,
said.

Bayer Healthcare has also acquired the Western OTC cough and cold
portfolio of Topsun Science and Technology for Rb1 billion ($156
million) as well as contingent payments of Rb192 million, subject
to the fulfilment of certain performance criteria. The portfolio,
which includes brands such as White & Black, reported Rb331
million in 2005 sales, the firms say.

The staff and assets related to the portfolio, including the
Gaitianli manufacturing facility in Qidong City, China, and the
national sales and distribution network associated with the
brands, will transfer to Bayer Healthcare and operate within its
consumer care division. SCRIP - World Pharmaceutical News -

Notes on PHIN

Changes implemented with January 2009 redesign:

1. PHIN, PHIC, PHID and PH08:
The redesigned database contains some additional data (see
below). As a result, the pre-2009 data is now searchable in a
separate archive file - PH08. This database will be available
from 14 February 2009.

PHIN will continue to be the archive file but only for data
loaded from January 2009 onwards. For data form 1980-2008 you
will have to repeat your search in PH08.

You can continue to use PHID to search just the latest day's data
and PHIC to search the latest five weeks' data.
