PSYC - PsycINFO

Content

The PsycINFO database provides extensive international coverage of
the literature on psychology and allied fields.

PsycINFO covers psychological practice and research as well as the
related clinical, social and biological disciplines.

This includes information on drug and behavioural therapy, treatment
of disease, drug addiction, developmental psychology, and
educational psychology, as well as the psychological aspects of such
areas as linguistics, social processes, pharmacology, physiology,
nursing, education, anthropology, business and law. Subject
searching is facilitated by means of PsycINFO's Psychological Index
Terms and PSYC includes an online thesaurus which allows easy access
to these terms.

The major emphasis of the database is on original research, while
case studies, literature reviews, surveys and discussions are also
covered. Detailed abstracts are provided for all documents in the
database, except dissertations.

Use PSYC to answer such questions as:
- have there been any studies on the credibility of children as
witnesses?
- what are the current programs available to help people give up
smoking?
- does the age of a child affect his/her adjustment to parental
divorce?
- what are the most recent stress management programs specifically
designed for use in a business setting?

Sources:
99% of the journals in the database are peer-reviewed, dating from
the early 1800s to the present day. Currently (May 2009), over 2400
journals are covered. For a complete list of the journals covered in
the database, refer to <http://www.apa.org/psycinfo/covlist.html>.
Nearly 80% of the database contains journal articles that are
accepted for coverage if archival, scholarly, peer reviewed, and
regularly published with titles, abstracts, and keywords in English.

Current chapter and book coverage includes worldwide English-
language material published from 1987 to date. Approximately 30% of
the material originates from Europe. US dissertations account for
about 12% the database.

AB - Abstract
(journal abstract) The empirical basis for the child sexual
abuse accommodation syndrome (CSAAS), a theoretical model
that posits that sexually abused children frequently display
secrecy, tentative disclosures, and retractions of abuse
statements was reviewed. Two data sources were evaluated:
retrospective studies of adults' reports of having been
abused as children and concurrent or chart-review studies of
children undergoing evaluation or treatment for sexual abuse.
The evidence indicates that the majority of abused children
do not reveal abuse during childhood. However, the evidence
fails to support the notion that denials, tentative
disclosures, and recantations characterize the disclosure
patterns of children with validated histories of sexual
abuse. These results are discussed in terms of their
implications governing the admissibility of expert testimony
on CSAAS. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2005 APA, all rights

(create) This book aims to arouse an interest in the subject
of management and to point the way whence instruction comes.
It should serve as an introduction to psychology and to
management, suggesting the relation of these two fields of
inquiries. The book defines and discusses different types and
aspects of management. Specifically, the issues of
individuality, functionalization in management are explored.
Measurement (analysis, standardization), records, programs,
teaching, incentives, and welfare of management are also
discussed. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2005 APA, all rights

AB - Abstract
(journal abstract) This study evaluated the additional
effectiveness of a 12-week manualized group counseling
program over a structured naltrexone treatment program. The
randomized controlled trial, the first of its kind in
Australia, was conducted at Turning Point Alcohol and Drug
Centre, Melbourne, Australia. Ninety-seven participants
received a 50 mg dose of naltrexone daily and were randomized
to either the experimental (n = 52) or control (n = 45)
conditions. The experimental group received a structured
group counseling program, which used a cognitive-behavioral
relapse prevention approach. Using intention-to-treat
analyses, there was only one statistically significant
difference between the groups, with the control group
reporting a significantly higher level of physical
functioning at Week 6. All participants improved
significantly in their level of heroin use and in
psychosocial functioning between Baseline and Weeks 6, 12,
and 24. It is not possible to conclude from these results
whether or not group counseling provides additional benefit
to naltrexone treatment. (Psyc INFO Database Record (c) 2005

AB - Abstract
(journal abstract) The use and evaluation of an innovative Web-
based technology and its suitability for promoting realism when
interacting in clinical nursing situations are described. Also
discussed are the development, implementation and evaluation of
online role-play simulation. Student and faculty-centered
insights are shared about the simulation and the technology
supporting it. This Web-based learning experience validated
literature review findings and offered new understanding about
extended learning, projected realism, diversity, seriousness,
non-verbal prompting, and evaluation. This simulation used the
Fablusi platform in which students experienced the outcomes of
their decisions and actions. This Web-based technology can be
adapted for different student groups to enhance learning. (Psyc

Notes on PSYC

AN - Accession number & update:
The 2009 reload sees the introduction of 'First Posting' documents.
These are documents that are made available prior to hard-copy
publication. As a result they will not have the usual volume, issue,
and pagination details. These documents can be identified by the
phrase 'First-posting' in the AN paragraph.

When the document appears in hard-copy, it is reposted in PSYC with
a standard source citation including volume and issue numbers,
pagination, and publication date. At the same time, an entry is
made in the NT - Notes - paragraph indicating the original first-
posting date.

SO - Source:
This paragraph contains information relating to the source
publication. Generally this is a journal publication or a book, but
can also be a dissertation abstract, or from an electronic
collection. If available the name and location of the publisher is
also given.

ISSN and eISSN:
Journals may exist in either a hard-copy and/or electronic format.
For articles that exist in both formats a standard ISSN and an
'electronic' ISSN (eISSN) may be available in the SO paragraph.
Both can be retrieved using the ISSN= quick-code.

Note that if only an electronic ISSN is available, it will be
displayed as a standard ISSN. This is to enable the document to be
retrieved by the Dialog eLinks feature.

AB - Abstract (tables of contents)
Documents that relate to complete books may include the table of
contents from that book. This table of contents appears in the AB
paragraph. Each table of contents entry may include the
corresponding PsycINFO accession number of the document that relates
the specific chapter entry.

Documents with tables of contents can be retrieved with TOC=YES.

DE/MJ/MN - Descriptors:
Not all documents in PsycINFO have descriptors. Those without
descriptors tend to be older documents. Therefore, if a descriptor
search retrieves zero results, you should also try the same search
without qualifying to DE.

A list of the new and changed thesaurus terms can be found in the
PsycINFO Vocabulary database guide. Search as BASE-YVOC.

NT - Notes:
The 2009 reload sees the introduction of 'First Posting' documents
(see AN - Accession number & update - for a description).

In addition, Publication History entries will capture multiple
dates for the publishing history of an article. This information
will allow users to track the publishing cycle for an article. The
following dates may be given:
- First submitted date
- Accepted date
- Revised date
- First posting date

CP - Copyright statement:
This new paragraph was introduced with the August 2009 reload. It is
applied only to article or chapter documents. It captures the
copyright holder of the document at the time of initial publication.

..RANK and ..MAP are available in the SO (journal names only), AU,
DE, MJ, CC and YR paragraphs.
