SciSearch is a multi-disciplinary index to the international
literature of science and technology. It corresponds to the
Science Citation Index and contains additional material from
the Cuttent Contents series of publications.
SciSearch's weekly updating gives extremely fast access to the
international literature of scientific and technical research.
It is structured to provide versatile retrieval possibilities:
in addition to the conventional search approaches, SciSearch
offers citation indexing to enable identification of current
articles by their earlier cited papers. The database contains
author abstracts, author keywords and KeyWords Plus.
Use SCIN to answer questions like:
- what are the evaluation and requirements of the HIV aids test
in pregnant women?
- what different chemotypes are found in the leaf and peel oils
of mandarins?
- how can breast cancer be detected at primary level?
- what authors cite J.A. Attaway's 1967 research?
Sources:
The database indexes all significant items (articles, reports of
meetings, letters, editorials, correction notices, etc.) from
approximately 5,700 scientific and technical journals published
worldwide.

AB - Abstract:
OBJECTIVE. The purpose of our study was to measure radiation
dose to the orbit during pediatric cranial CT with and
without bismuth shielding using a novel dosimetry system.
Cranial CT was performed on a pediatric anthropomorphic
phantom, with and without bismuth eye shields. A solid-state
metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET)
dosimeter was used to obtain real-time dose measurements.
CONCLUSION. Bismuth shielding reduced radiation dose to the
eye by up to 42%; shield artifact fell outside the
diagnostic area of interest.

AU - Author(s):
Qualify searches of author names to Authors (paragraph AU)
to distinguish them from the author names in cited references
(paragraph CR). For example:
1_: SMITH-J$.AU.
IN - Institution:
Search using abbreviations, e.g. INST, UNIV, etc.
CN - Country name:
The CN paragraph gives the country of research, when this is
given separately from the country of the authors affiliation.
(The latter would appear in IN).
For comprehensive country searching use both CN and IN, e.g.
1_: FRANCE.CN, IN.
AV - Abstract availability:
This paragraph indicates if author abstract is available or not.
Search AV using quick codes:
1_: ABSTRACT=YES or AB=Y
or:
2_: ABSTRACT=NO or AB=N
SO - Source:
Qualify single word source names to .SO., e.g.:
1_: BIOCHEMICAL.SO..W.
Search SO paragraph for volume numbers as, e.g.:
2_: 1 WITH V28
Search for issue numbers as:
3_: 1 WITH N1
GA - Genuine article:
The code in this paragraph represents the journal issue as
displayed in the SO paragraph.
DE - Descriptor(s)
A superlabel for Author keyword(s) and KeyWords Plus
paragraphs. For comprehensive subject searching, qualify search
terms to .TI, DE, AB. to include title, author keywords,
Keywords Plus and abstracts, e.g.:
1_: MANDARIN.TI, DE, AB.
Use DE label also to print both KW and KP.
CC - Current contents edition:
Six categories are available: AGRI, CLIN, ENGI, LIFE, PHYS and
SOCA. These are only present in SCIN until the end of 2000.
Search using the 4-character quick code rather than full text,
for example:
1_: CC=AGRI
Please note that the paragraph label CC was replaced by SF in
1997, but for searching purposes the quick code CC= applies to
the whole database until the end of 2000, after which they were
no longer supplied by ISI.
JC - Journal subject category code:
ISI journal titles are classified into approximately 130
categories. Use for broad subject searches where appropriate,
for example:
1_: BIOLOGY.JC.
PT - Publication type:
Use PT= for searching document type. Commonly used document
types include:
PT=E Editorial (includes 'Discussion' from January 1996)
PT=L Letter
PT=M Meeting abstract
PT=R Review
PT=U Article (includes 'Chronology' and 'Note' from January 1996)
PT=5 News item (from January 1996)
Since 1997, publication types can also be searched using the PT=
quick code. The most commonly used publication types are;
PT=J (Journal)
PT=S (Series)
CR - Cited references:
Use truncation or ..ROOT at any stage in a cited reference. For
example, if you know the name of the author of a cited reference
and the year of publication, but you do not know the volume or
page numbers, search as:
1_: MAZZA-G-1987$
To link an author to a publication within a cited reference,
link the two search elements using 'WITH', e.g.:
2_: MAZZA-G-1987$ WITH SCI-ALIMENT
RF - Research fronts:
Note: From January 1, 1998 research fronts are no longer supplied.
supplied. Refer to the specific section on Research Fronts in
BASE, search BASE-SCIN.
Search options:
..SET PLURALS ON and ..SET MEDWORD ON can be selected in SCIN.
..RANK and ..MAP: Are available in the AU and SO paragraphs.
