The CABI Veterinary Science & Medicine database is a unique
bibliographic source of information on all aspects of veterinary
science and medicine.
VETS documents comprise bibliographic details, mainly with
abstracts, of the international literature on all aspects of
veterinary medicine. Subjects covered include: diseases of
livestock, poultry, pets, laboratory animals, zoo animals,
farmed fish and shellfish, and certain wild animals; anatomy,
physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, surgery, radiography,
toxicology, immunology and immunogenetics of domestic animals;
bacteriology, virology, mycology, protozoology, helminthology
and entomology related to animal diseases; zoonoses; meat
inspection; and the economics of animal diseases.
CABI Veterinary Science & Medicine database will be an
invaluable resource to veterinary practitioners, research
scientists, animal heath interest groups, and anyone with a need
for in-depth coverage of the world's literature on veterinary
science and medicine.
Use VETS to answer questions like:
- which animal feed additives produce best yield results?
- how should you treat BSE in cattle?
- what is the best treatment for glaucoma in dogs?
- what new methods of chemotherapy are effective in domestic
cats?
Sources:
The database is the online equivalent of a number of CAB
INTERNATIONAL's publications: Index Veterinarius, Veterinary
Bulletin, Protozoological Abstracts, Dairy Science Abstracts,
Review of Medical & Veterinary Entomology, Review of Medical &
Veterinary Mycology, and Animal Breeding Abstracts.
Approximately 6,000 serial sources and 500 books are covered
each year. Additionally, conference proceedings, bulletins and
newsletters are abstracted.

AB - Abstract
Exposure of young swordtail (Xiphophorus helleri) to
increasing concentrations of synthetic humic substances
(HS1500) significantly effected the physiological condition
and slightly effected the sex ratio of the fish. Any
exposure enhanced the body mass development of the swordtail
compared to the control. No dose-dependent effect of HS on
growth was detectable. After a 2-week period of stressful
handling, the HS-exposed fish recovered quickly whereas
growth stagnated in the control fish. The examination of
gills, fins, and skins revealed no infestation with
ectoparasites. We assume that the growth promoting effect of
HS1500 was due to an overall stimulation in metabolism.
Furthermore, the sex ratio of fish exposed to HS1500 for 21
weeks slightly shifted in favour of females in a dose-
dependent manner. Although the mode of action is still
obscure, there is a probability that alkylphenol structures
in HS1500 may be responsible for this weak feminization.

VETS was reloaded in November 2007, so as to apply the latest
thesaurus. There were no structural changes at this time.
DE - DESCRIPTORS
The DE paragraph lists index terms used to describe the most
important concepts in the document. They are assigned from the CAB
thesaurus. Thesaurus terms can be searched on using the online
thesaurus.
In addition, the DE paragraph also includes 'Up-posted terms'.
These are broad categories relevant to the descriptors, providing an
overview of the hierarchy. They are only available for certain
hierarchies in the database, i.e. taxonomic groups of organisms,
geographic regions, pesticides and fertilisers.
CC - CABICODES:
These indicate the general subject categories covered by the
document. They are designed to be used in conjunction with other
descriptor terms. Codes are hierarchical and can be searched at
two, three or four characters using the hash symbol (#) for
wider retrieval. A full list of CABICODES is given online in
BASE. Search as BASE-VETS.
KW - Keywords:
These include terms from open-ended categories - e.g. chemical
names, organisms, specific animal breeds, etc. For pre-1984 data
non-controlled descriptor terms also appear here.
SE - Subset codes:
These codes represent the subsets used by the information
provider to create their own database products. They should not
be used as an indexing tool to search the database.
LS - Language of summary in original:
Indicates the language(s) in which the author's abstract or
summary was written, except in cases where this is the same
language as the original text of the paper.
AV - Availability:
Contains the URL of the source publication, or an order number
for obtaining a copy of the original article from CAB
INTERNATIONAL's own document delivery facility.
DO - Digital object identifier:
An alternative URL for accessing original copies of the
research. Note that you usually need to be a subscriber to
access these documents.
DT - Publication date:
It is now DataStar standard to create a an eight-digit
publication date - even if a specific date is not given. In
VETS, this paragraph will be populated in the format YYYY0000.
Search options:
..SET PLURALS ON and ..SET MEDWORD ON may be selected in VETS.
Guides:
The full guide to CAB VETERINARY SCIENCE & MEDICINE is available
online in the BASE database - search as BASE-VETS.
